Today we are discussing our largest organ, the skin, and I’d like to welcome Kari Gran. For over 10 years, Kari Gran Skincare has been thriving in the world of clean and natural skincare. Starting a company from scratch in a fiercely competitive industry may not seem like an expected or safe mid-career pivot, but that is exactly what Kari Gran and Lisa Strain, did. At 29, Kari was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease and Hashimoto’s Disease. Both are autoimmune forms of thyroid disease. By her mid 30’s, even drier skin arrived along with what would be the 10+ years of perimenopause. Because of this, Kari started looking into everything from what she ate to what she put on her face. This led her to begin formulating products that fit her skincare needs. Lisa had the big idea to turn Kari’s products into a business, seeing a need for women that wasn’t really being met in a way that felt authentic or truth-telling. Or, plainly put, calling BS on the beauty industry. Kari formulates the line and oversees operations and Lisa’s the CEO and keeps the business humming along. The company is built around a small number of edited, oil-based products that they personally researched, developed, and tested. With the combined ages of 116, Kari and Lisa discovered that more is not better when it comes to skincare products. We only need a few simple steps each day to care for our skin.

Dr. Renee is a double board certified doctor who has been working with women for over 20 years and due to her own personal health challenges, she stepped outside the box of conventional medicine to take a radically different approach to heal herself from the deep depths of burnout. About a decade ago, Dr. Renee was living what she thought was her dream life; she was an extremely busy Ob/Gyn, married to a doctor, with toddler twins and had moved to a quaint, quiet town in the country. One day in May 2012, Dr. Renee fell off of her horse during a riding lesson and broke her back. She not only struggled with severe back pain, but with fatigue and the inability to focus. Her doctor diagnosed her with depression, but her symptoms did not improve after trying two different antidepressants. It is truly amazing how many of us found functional and integrative medicine through our own school of hard knocks!

Founder and CEO Stephanie Perez started training for triathlons in 2010 and she struggled to find high-quality women’s performance apparel that was also flattering and fashion-forward. As a former Division I athlete, she had encountered this problem before: Most high-tech athletic gear was cut for men, or didn’t fit well. And she is committed to non-toxic clothing that is also eco-friendly. These are areas so near and dear to my heart and there’s more to learn from her sophisticated technology with SPF.

The Rise of Plant Medicine in Modern Times is here… From academia to Wall Street, Burning Man to suburban soccer fields, the healing power of nature is spreading across the country. Not everyone can take off for an Ayahuasca journey in the jungle, but everyone can experience sacred medicine through the practice of micro-dosing. The beautiful practice of micro-dosing is the daily practice of taking small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelic medicines to promote healing, growth and transformation. Kayse Gehret, our guest today has over two decades in the healing arts – is the founder of Micro-dosing for Healing. Her program is a nationwide virtual platform combining micro-dosing education and supportive community. The interactive group programs offer a unique, intimate community of individuals drawn to practice with diverse intentions… including physical healing, mental wellness, emotional balance and spiritual connection. Unlike pharmaceutical medications, natural plant medicines help us heal at the root cause and show tremendous potential for the healing of PTSD, trauma, adverse childhood experiences, depression and anxiety. The intention of the program is to introduce individuals to the transformative practice of micro-dosing earth medicines, inspire a lifelong connection to nature, instill a reverence & respect for the medicines and create the conditions for healing inside a welcoming, supportive container.

Dr Meenakshi, Kumar, also referred to as Cosmos, is a 48 year old proud wearer of her gray, a gender and sexually fluid human, mother to an incredible 17 year old son, a family medicine, functional medicine and palliative care doctor at BMC/BU in Boston, a love, sex, relationship coach in training with VITA, a painter and a blogger. When she’s free, she enjoys hugging trees, playing the sitar, listening to music and dancing anywhere (she’ll embarrass anyone by stopping to dance on the street), reading (she started a book club 6 years ago that still meets monthly), cooking, watching lots of TV and movies and pre-pandemic traveling. She tries hard to keep her professional and personal lives intertwined so she can be an authentic human when interacting with her patients and the more she does that, the more she sees the folly in trying to do it otherwise. Her mode of operation is to break norms, think outside the box and then smash the box and burn it, speak up and be true to who you are. I had the pleasure of working with Meena at an integrative clinic and since she has been in her practice in Boston, I still refer clients to her, collaboratively working with from the east coast to the west! We are in for a real treat today – breaking down the walls for women.

My mother used to say to me, Julie, Tuesday’s child was born to have a hard life and you sure have. I guess there are times when I could relate to that but I’ve grown to view challenges as opportunities and to find the lessons for personal growth and support of others. Today’s discussion is about my evolving definition of just what is mental illness, mental wellness and the gray area in between. I’ve been passionate about this topic since I was a little child, first witnessing a favorite aunt with psychotic behavior, then being in class with a few folks who were teased and bullied for being “retarded” as these folks were labeled in the 50s and 60s. I always had a soft place in my heart, would talk to them and include them in activities at school. After all, I was obese and often left out and bullies as well.
