This podcast is an extension of the Seeking Sustainability Live Talkshow-Podcast launched in 2020– interviews with good people doing great things with a lens on sustainability innovation and insights in Japan. Every week, I will be introducing stories from my trips around Japan sharing insights into local innovation and connecting them with other trips, ideas from experts and examples of best-practice that could be applied to your work, life, or travels wherever you are in the world.

Zero-Waste Branding Scrutiny - What is a Sustainable Destination in Japan?
What is zero-waste look like in actuality, does it really mean zero-waste?! This is the audio for an article I wrote onhttps://medium.com/@jjwalsh/zero-waste-branding-scrutiny-a767c8e3821b ( MEDIUM titled "Zero-Waste Branding Scrutiny") in response to an "insight tour" I gave to a visiting journalist who wanted to add Kamikatsu to his book, but was disappointed. This informs me as to how I need to do future tours and orientations of the town to better prepare visitors to take in the progress of this sustainable destination fridges and all. Please get in touch if you are interested in joining one of my online courses, women inspire events held in sustainable destinations, or booking an "insight tour" of a sustainable destination in Japan of your own before you plan on visiting. I am also open to future bookings to go with you on an insight tour of a sustainable destination to help you get a great overview and backstory of the area as well as introduce you to the key entrepreneurs and businesses focused on sustainability in the area. Look forward to hearing from you. #sustainabletravel #japan #sustainabilityguide #zerowaste #sustainabledestination #zerowastetown #kamikatsu #tokushima #shikoku https://linktr.ee/jjwalsh (Find all links for JJWalsh on LinkTree)

Hawaii vs Japan - 6 Highlights from Hawaii about Sustainability in Travel, Life & Community
Hello Podcast listeners- apologies for the long absence, working from outside my normal studio at home in Japan has been a bigger challenge than expected, but I am back and rearing to go. Over the next few weeks, I am taking a break from the usual focus on Japan, to add insights from my break in Hawaii which also help us see issues and successes in Japan more clearly. Seeing my island home after many years away gave me new ideas and points of comparison with issues and successes I see in Japan. If you are interested in Hawaii and Japan, these pods are for you! In this pod, I talk about 6 of the sustainability focused initiatives I was excited about in Hawaii - from a family-run watercress farm in the central of a shopping area that has survived development, to the public-access to Hawaii's beautiful natural assets for locals and visitors. This is an expansion of the https://medium.com/@jjwalsh/5-hawaii-people-planet-profit-highlights-in-2022-6efbf2ca1ff6 (article I wrote about it on MEDIUM here.) I plan to continue writing (and podcasting about) these insights over the next few weeks as I unpack a lot of the innovation, policies, entrepreneurship and inspiration I saw and engaged with on this summer from Oahu, Hawaii's main island. I'd love to hear what you think of these ideas, DM or tag me with your thoughts: https://linktr.ee/jjwalsh (Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / LinkedIn / YouTube / Medium / Substack / Patreon / BMAC / KoFi ) https://linktr.ee/jjwalsh (Find out more about JJWalsh on InboundAmbassador / Seek Sustainable Japan websites )

Short Travel Experience Becomes Life Transition in Small Rural Town - Entrepreneur-writer Hannah Kirshner
Last year food-stylist author Hannah Kirshner gave us insights into her book on her experiences in a small rural town in Ishikawa- she learned how to make sake, grew organic rice, hunted for boar and wild ducks, made charcoal, turned wood into bowls, and worked at a stylish izakaya bar that started her incredible journey. This time, Hannah joins us from New York to give us an update in 2022 on her projects and life in Yamanaka with a special focus on the Kitchen-Studio idea she has to convert an old house into a beautiful, community-building shared kitchen and business space for cooking lessons and pop-up restaurant collaboration opportunities. Hannah Kirshner's book, WATER, WOOD & WILD THINGS shares deep Japan experiences from a small rural town making sake, learning local culture and traditions first hand. Our talk in 2021 was episode https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/194 (#194) when the book was first published: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLoqDyZY9-A&t=0s (https://youtu.be/RLoqDyZY9-A) This first talk in 2021 is something that I often refer back to and make Japan connections from, so it was great to follow-up now that the paperback version is out and Hannah is building on her connections and experiences in Yamanaka town to now renovate an old home into a community-building project called "Kidori". It will be great to catch up on how her experiences have developed and changed and what new insights she would add if she wrote the book now. I am also excited to learn how her book has been received by various audiences and her plans for the future. Exploring Japan's Castles - Insights from Historians Oleg Benesh and Ran Zwigenberg
Historian-authors Oleg Benesch and Ran Zwigenberg give us insights from their interesting book about Japanese castles which is now in paperback format: BOOK: Japan's Castles - Citadels of Modernity in War and Peace (3/2020 - Cambridge University Press) Japan's castles have had interesting transitions in how they were rebranded throughout history- especially in post WW2 Japan. The changes were due to shifts in public perspectives of the role of the military and how the government wanted to represent Japan's military past. Changes were also due to domestic and international tourism narratives which change over time. Interesting shifts in how the castles were used as military headquarters, but are presented without representation of their wartime uses, reflecting older, feudal histories instead. The repurposing of military facilities into art museums, libraries, schools and sports arenas is another interesting point. The conflict between private and public land as well as the necessities to retrofit the castles to be more accessible and barrier free are also addressed. Foraging for Wild Foods Across Japan & Translating Stories Back Into Japanese - talking with author Winifred Bird
Foraging for food in forests, rivers and oceans is an important aspect of human survival throughout history and in Japan, there is still a use of and admiration of foraged foods as a part of the seasonal appeal of dishes. https://youtu.be/TQj8SOFlIAo (Watch the Video of this talk here on YouTube) Winifred Bird spent years researching and writing stories of people across Japan who are still engaged with SANSAI foraging as a part of their lifestyle or business. In this follow up talk, Winifred shares some insights from some of the interviews she has done since our last talk which has raised new questions as well as her recent collaboration with the translator working on the Japanese version of her book to be released this autumn. In March of 2021 Winifred Bird joined the #SeekSustainableJapan to talk about her new book "Eating Wild Japan- tracking the culture of foraged foods with a guide to plants and recipes". I have referred to this wonderful book in many talks, consulting opportunities and seminars- it is such a wonderful resource of information about the history and culture of foraging for food in Japan in the past and present. In this talk, Winifred Bird will give us an update on how the translation of the book into Japanese has been over the last year as well as other insights and revelations from the book as we continue our conversation from last year. 60th Sustainable Travel Japan Podcast - The Meaning of Good Travel Musings
Wow! the 60th sustainable travel Japan episode- thank you all for your support in getting to this point. Some thoughts about sustainable travel and tourism here on things I've learned about the importance of travel for a more sustainable, peaceful and empathetic world. In 2019, I was training guides how to better communicate information and stories to inbound (international) visitors. Now, in 2022 I have taken that to the next level this year by applying some of the principles myself which helps me better train and support others who want to develop a stronger, more sustainable brand that appeals to visitors (and new residents). If you are interested in joining me for a free online tour on HeyGo, it would be great to have you there! https://www.heygo.com/jj-walsh-in-japan (https://www.heygo.com/jj-walsh-in-japan) If you are interested in a in-person tour when you are visiting the Hiroshima area, please drop me a message on social media to set something up from 30mins to half a day orientation tours. I love to meet people at the start of their day and give them an introductory tour then set them off to explore and deepen their experience on their own. Sustainable Tourism and Travel Courses with Joy - https://www.inboundambassador.com/category/sustainable-travel-guide-course/ (Details & Sign-Ups) I have also been contacted by educators looking for bespoke tours in-person and online for their groups of students. I am happy to cater a tour to the needs of your group. https://linktr.ee/jjwalsh (Contact me) via one of these links - I look forward to working with you.

Japan Travel Explorations - Writing, Wandering and Diving into Japanese Traditions - Ted Taylor
Ted Taylor is a writer and travel guide who loves long wanders around Japan and sharing insights about culture, tradition, history and folklore he learns along the way with his audience and visitors. Here we talk about his philosophy to enjoy life and travel in Japan as well as some of his writing projects and explorations. Edward J. Taylor is a musician, writer and explorer who has lived and traveled wide & far across Japan. Born in New York city and raised on the American east coast, Ted moved to a small town in rural New Mexico at age 14. After degrees in Creative Writing, Music, and Film at the University of Arizona, he began a Masters in Anthropology at UC Santa Barbara. But his attention was pulled East. Interests in Zen Buddhism and Aikido, an original martial art of Japan, led Ted to first visit Japan in 1994. He settled into the countryside of Tottori, a remote prefecture on Japan’s Sea of Japan coast and for the following eleven years Ted set about his studies. His interest in martial arts expanded to Iaido, swordsmanship, and Kyudo, archery, while his Zen practice was supplemented with training in Shugendo, an esoteric religion associated with itinerant monks. Originally a drummer and percussionist, Ted also pursued his musical interests by taking up Taiko drumming and the Shakuhachi flute. As an occasional itinerant musician Ted gave drumming and percussion performances throughout Japan. During his time in Tottori, Ted also learnt how to grow rice using traditional rice farming methods and this led him to become curious about how the physical environment and its conditions shape local culture. This interest has subsequently blossomed into a passion and to this day Ted likes nothing better than escaping into rural Japan and its traditional society. An invitation to train in the 16th Century martial art of Takeuchi-ryu Bujutsu was the impetus for Ted moving to Kyoto in 2005. Despite living in the city, Ted spent much of his time out of it walking many of Japan's old roads, including the entire Nakasendo post road as well as completing the pilgrimages of the Shikoku 88 temple trail and the Kumano Kodo. Edward is the co-editor of the Deep Kyoto Walks anthology, and is currently at work on a series of books about walking Japan's ancient highways. http://notesfromthenog.blogspot.jp/ (http://notesfromthenog.blogspot.jp/) ** About JJWalsh - InboundAmbassador ** JJWalsh is a sustainability-focused advisor, trainer and consultant based in Hiroshima, Japan. Welcoming visitors & new residents to enjoy the charms of a small village in the Kumano Mountains | Lee Xian Jie
Entrepreneur Lee Xian Jie is a Singaporean who studied in Tokyo, worked in tourism as a guide in Kyoto, and is now a community builder and entrepreneur in Ryujinmura village, Wakayama - deep in the Kumano mountains, where is he preparing to open his own cafe and guest house. In this talk, Lee tells us about the old houses he has been renovating for himself and his friends, cutting grass, harvesting Japanese tea on ancient trees around the area, composting, creating bee hives, and creating a cafe which will feature local foods as well as his own signature tea blends. All of Lee's projects provide a service to the local community as it is bringing life back to a dying rural village. I met Lee at the 2022 Minka Summit where he shared insights about his life and efforts to revive the dwindling community in Ryujinmura where he founded the RYUNOHARA project - 'a traditional Japanese farmhouse restoration and future farm & farm-to-table cafe.' Renting Traditional Homes to Build Community in Rural Nagano Snow Country - Ed Statham
Coronavirus has made teleworking a possibility and long vacations abroad where you can rent a beautiful rural house for a long workcation is becoming more of a possibility. Ed Statham came to Japan on a break from his scuba dive business in Indonesia, and has renovated 3 abandoned houses in his small rural area to be used as rentals and has had great success with attracting tenants who are also helping to revive the community. Here he talks about renovation but also community building in rural Japan. Ed Statham is one of the many inspiring people I met at the https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/minkasummit (#MinkaSummit) - here we talk about how he is making good use of abandoned MINKA (traditional Japanese houses) in the rural area of Nagano, in a beautiful mountaineous area called Nozawa. Ed is originally from the UK has been living a life of contrasts as a scuba dive instructor and business entrepreneur in Indonesia and now settled in rural Nagano where he has done a few renovation projects on 100+ year old houses https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/minka (#minka) https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/kominka (#kominka) Looking forward to a lively chat about the Minka Summit, Ed's remodel projects, and future potential he sees for reviving rural areas and making good use of Japan's abandoned Kominka houses. https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/kominka (#kominka) https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/japan (#japan) https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/nagano (#nagano) https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/nozawa (#nozawa) https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/communitybuilding (#communitybuilding) https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/rural (#rural) ~~~~ About the Seek-Sustainable-Japan Host, JJWalsh JJWalsh is the founder of Inbound Ambassador - a Hiroshima-based sustainability-focused consultancy, strategy, advising & content creation business. Sustainable Daisen Travel Experiences to Save the Giant Salamanders - Guided hikes, cycle, walks in Tottori Japan
Richard Pearce is the Founding Director at Bushido Adventure Travel Ltd and Owner at Richiyado Guesthouse who has a passion for sustainable travel and tourism in the Tottori area of Japan. https://youtu.be/8x4yAbk5vNo (Watch the video of this talk) Richard also started a new organization in recent years to protect the Giant Salamanders of Mt.Daisen and in the process realized the need is beyond the animals themselves, as it is necessary to take on sustainability focused projects that enhance the level of environmental protection for the area. The Sustainable Daisen NPO which Richard co-founded does lots of great work in the Tottori area to reduce the use of plastics, increase environmental and social impact awareness, and plant trees to regenerate the forest, streams and natural areas around Daisen. Renovating a Regal House into a Guest Lodge and Cafe in Sasama Village
Dr.Shelley Clarke found a beautiful mountain community she would call home while cycling around the rural area of Shizuoka in Japan. Now Shelley is based in that small village deep in the mountains which has a population of only 70 people. Shelley has created a guest lodge, cafe, and has restored the traditional garden in the 600 year old regal estate she bought for a bargain of 10 million yen ($100,000 USD). Shelley has been very active in welcoming the local community who were once shunned by the original owners of the estate. She collaborates with local women to run the cafe and is helping in many ways to revive the town and attract new residents and visitors. https://my.captivate.fm/Video%20link%20https://youtu.be/i_TFIyOvYV8 (Watch the Video) Here we talk about the beautiful abandoned house that she bought and remodeled - this traditional house and garden was called Sasu-Ichi which she restored and renovated into a beautiful home, lodge and cafe. Shelley is an avid cyclist, is learning the koto (that she found in the house), and performs with a local Kagura troupe. Dr.Shelley Clarke is a sustainable fisheries consultant working on projects with the UN. She is the founder of Sasama consulting. We will have her join a follow up talk to dive into her work with the United Nations and the issues of our common oceans. Foraging for Food Across Nihon in "Eating Wild Japan" | Talking with author Winifred Bird
Have you ever wondered what a 10-course feast centered on Bamboo would be like, or if you could survive by foraging for wild foods in the forest? These are issues Winifred Bird discusses in her book "Eating Wild Japan". Winifred is a writer who spent months traveling across Japan to talk with local people who are carrying on traditions of foraging for food in the forests and seas. https://amzn.to/31F3hLl (Buy The Book) | https://www.winifredbird.com/ (Winifred Bird's Official Website) This was such an interesting talk with Winifred and it is a richly detailed book that a wide audience will enjoy. I found the crossover between cultivated and wild foods so interesting as well as the reminder that the ways of our ancestors was less wasteful, more focused on only taking what we need and nurturing the rest to grow when future generations may need it. On the flip side, the concept that choosing not to eat horse chestnuts for example, or bamboo shoots, or choosing to use plastic for single-use cutlery and baskets (and in the fishing industry) instead of bamboo can cause the crops to become wild, or cut to oblivion. A new angle from which to admire how conservationism and commerce are connected and key to our own survival. https://youtu.be/wb74hmJMQq8 (Watch the video of the interview with Winnie here) which includes a show of her photos.
