Episode 108:Today’s class is a short Feldenkrais lesson that will be done lying on the back. This simple, but effective lesson, creates a sense of wholeness and connection from your feet to your head. This lesson is from the Feldenkrais Mini Lessons course that can be purchased. This self paced course has 16 mini lessons ranging from 15- 30 minutes. The lessons in this course are there for you when you need a shift or interruption of your current state, but don’t have an hour to spare. I like to think of them as more than a 5 minute movement snack, but also not the whole buffet. Just the right nourishment. Sarah Baumert has been teaching movement since 2006. Episode 106: Today’s class is a short meditation that can be done lying down in savasana or sitting upright. Our inquiry of study during this meditation was inspired by two of my most influential teachers, Insight Meditation teacher Mark Nunberg and Feldenkrais trainer Jeff Haller. You won’t need anything for this class, except a cushion or blanket to sit on, or if you choose to lie down, please have any props you will need if you choose to do the meditation lying down. Episode 104: Today’s class is a short breath awareness meditation done in savasana with a weight placed on the belly. You will need something heavy that you can place on your abdomen. If you have a yoga sandbag, this works great. Most people don’t have that, so I suggest finding one or two very thick books. A thick textbook could work well. If you are using a book, then you will also want to have a blanket or a towel that you can place underneath the book, so that the weight is not hard or pressing into any part of you in an uncomfortable way. Episode 103: Today’s class is focused on calming the eyes. This class is similar to Episode 56, but I wanted to re record and re-teach the class, as it has been a popular episode and I wanted to get a higher quality audio version of it for you. In this short Feldenkrais lesson, the eyes, their state of calm, and the quality of our dark vision becomes a marker of the overall state of the nervous system. When one’s visual stimulation calms down, it can have a relaxing effect on the neck, jaw, breathing, face and more. And as a result, your whole self will settle down, get quiet and the sharpness of your vision can increase. So, let's see how we can organize our vision to make the orientation clear and smooth, so that the muscle tone in the whole body can become organized and engaged to do a function well. If you enjoy this lesson, you may consider joining the Feldenkrais Series:Being Good to Yourself: Caring for your Neck, Shoulders, Eyes, & BreathIn 8 lessons we explore how important the eyes are for organizing the rest of the body. Episode 102: Today’s class is an exploration of the breath. In yoga, we call this pranayama. However today’s lesson will be more of a Feldenkrais inspired way of paying attention to the breath. With each proposal, each variation of breathing, I invite you to listen and take care. If at any moment you feel the way you are breathing creates tension or shortness of breath, please do the breathing proposal with much less intensity or even imagine the movement. If you enjoy this lesson, you may consider joining the Feldenkrais Series: Being Good to Yourself: Caring for your Neck, Shoulders, Eyes, & Breath In this series, we will explore lessons that promote self-connection and pleasure, finding equanimity in movement, and adapting to change with resilience. In a world where technology has become ever more prevalent, it can be easy to feel disconnected from our bodies, our emotions, and the people around us. Tension in the neck, shoulders and eyes can become a persistent nuisance, but through the gentle, exploratory movements of the Feldenkrais Method, we can find a sense of joy and connection that is uniquely human. Check out more info on this series that anyone can join via livestream or recordings. Sarah Baumert has been teaching movement since 2006. Episode 100: Today I am going to share with you an episode of the Expand Your Abilities Podcast with Jeffrey Schwinghammer. Jeffrey is a filmmaker and Feldenkrais practitioner and the director of the upcoming documentary on the Feldenkrais Method. I’m really enjoying how his podcast is breaking down some really complex principles of the Feldenkrais method. In his recent interview with me we discussed my background, how I came to teach both yoga and Feldenkrais, and how learning to move efficiently can enhance the quality of our life. Our conversation leads to talking about finding a sense of freedom in your body and how Feldenkrais is a way to unlearn any sense of having an external authority over your body. This is a huge topic, a topic that I am currently exploring in my Feldenkrais series Autonomy and Personal Freedom. So, I hope you enjoy this conversation about feeling free in your body, and how Feldenkrais and yoga complement each other. Be sure to check out some of Jeffrey’s other episodes of the  Expand Your Abilities Podcast. Sarah Baumert has been teaching movement since 2006. Episode 95: Today's podcast is constructed in two parts. First, I will be talking about posture as a dynamic system and giving some information on my Feldenkrais series, Posture Matters, explaining how a Feldenkrais approach to posture restoration is different from other modalities. Then we will go into an abbreviated lesson.  The lesson portion of today is a little taste of the first lesson in the Posture Matters series and begins around 21:33. Posture, including the tension in the shoulders and the neck that originates from a forwardness of one’s head is one of the most requested topics I get from students. It’s a difficulty that none of us are immune to. If you are interested in this work, join the Posture Matters series which can always be done as a self-paced course. Episode 94: A 60 minute live class blending Feldenkrais and gentle yoga poses. In this class we explore creating a sense of width in the body. Oftentimes if our eyes have a more narrow focus (like when we are looking at a fixed object such as a screen), then our whole body can start to shrink inward and feel compressed. This is a fantastic practice to juice up the spine after a day of sitting and integrate the eyes after a day of looking at a screen. Sarah Baumert has been teaching movement since 2006. Episode 89:  A short Feldenkrais lesson using the pubic bone, the tailbone, and the creases of the hip joints as anatomical places of reference and awareness. This mini lesson is an example of the direction that the lessons will start to take in the Pelvic Floor and Deep Core Rapport Series. This lesson continues the process of finding power and grace from your pelvis. What set's this practice apart from other pelvic explorations is the subtlety of it all and the inner connections you'll make from your perineum to your hip joints. For many people, this lesson may help you start to simply sense your hip joints as part of the pelvis. This is a nice lesson to pair with Episode 86: which was a yoga class with Pubic Bone Awareness.Sarah Baumert has been teaching movement since 2006. Episode 88:  An informational podcast about pelvic floor and deep abdominal health. Pelvic Floor Health and Abdominal strengthening is one of the most requested topics I get from students. Today, I will be discussing why pelvic floor health is so important and give you some context for my series: The Pelvic Floor and Deep Core Rapport. The 8 week series will be taught livestream starting September 25th, with options to purchase the lessons to do as a self paced course. The function of the pelvic floor has a profound effect on our quality of life. So anything that can be done to bring more ease or a higher quality of control in this area can be revolutionary. For both men and women, improving the ability to both relax and engage the pelvic floor and the deep abdominal muscles can have positive effects on:Back painSensing a deeper and more relaxed breathEasier standing and walkingImproved BalanceHealing from hip replacements or abdominal surgeriesBetter sex through increased awareness, sensation and controlMore effective bladder controlLack of strength, coordination, or sensation in this area after giving birthSarah Baumert has been teaching movement since 2006. Episode 84:  The second of a series of classes I am posting as an introduction to the Body Matter Feldenkrais® series, Soften the System.Today we take another Feldenkrais® approach to practicing the ability to settle the body. This class utilizes the powerful effect that calming the hands can have on our whole system. Our hands, palm, and fingers take up an enormous amount of room in our motor cortex. And if we can effectively calm and inhibit the unnecessary of activity in one area of the motor cortex, the process tends to spread and extend to other areas in the motor cortex.  Areas beyond just the hand can thus be affected. We think we are doing something with our hand, but we are doing something with our brain! Feel how the softening spreads, and the relaxed feeling generalizes throughout your whole system. If you resonate with TODAY’s approach, you may be interested in these self-paced Feldenkrais audio series:Soften the System Feldenkrais SeriesSensing Subtlety and Satisfaction Feldenkrais SeriesUnraveling Body Anxiety Feldenkrais SeriesSarah Baumert has been teaching movement since 2006. Episode 81:  A grounding practice that gives you effective learning tools for nervous system care, pain management, and finding ease while the body is in a stress response. This episode uses a rocking motion often associated with self soothing and we continue our look at neck care by zooming out to the whole system. This Feldenkrais approach to Neck Care connects the ankles, the pelvis, and the whole self to how the neck moves. It might seem like your ankles or feet would have nothing to do with your neck tension. So, let’s find out! If there is tension or a lot of pain in the neck, focusing only there and bringing more and more of your attention to the place that hurts may not always be a wise idea! If you resonate with TODAY’s approach or are finding that your neck pain may be linked to jaw tension, for an even deeper study of this topic from a Feldenkrais lens, you can check out the: Sensing Subtlety and Satisfaction Jaw Series, andUnraveling Body Anxiety Feldenkrais Series. To access all the neck care resources, you can of course check out the previous podcast episodes on Neck CARE and this Sample video class that works with these similar concepts, register to watch the class here.Sarah Baumert has been teaching movement since 2006. Episode 80:  A Feldenkrais approach to Neck Care, connecting the shoulders, the chest, and the whole self to how the neck moves, and how the neck can feel supported. With poor postural organization, it’s common that the muscles of your neck are forced to work overtime to hold your head up. If you are trying all of the neck classes in this series, take note of which approach you are finding most helpful and supportive for you, and then return to those episodes. If you resonate with TODAY’s approachFor an even deeper study of this topic from a Feldenkrais lens, you can check out myFreeing the Neck and Shoulders Feldenkrais Series, andUnraveling Body Anxiety Feldenkrais Series.
