How to be successful at dealing with stressfull situations and emotions. Interview with Dr. Gina Simmons Schneider
On this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking to  Dr. Gina Simmons Schneider. Gina is the author of Frazzlebrain: Break Free from Anxiety, Anger, and Stress Using Advanced Discoveries in Neuropsychology (Central Recovery Press, March 2022). She is a licensed psychotherapist, executive coach, and corporate trainer. She serves as codirector of Schneider Counseling and Corporate Solutions.Dr. Schneider is a coping skills expert with more than 25 years of experience helping people regulate difficult emotions and conflicts. Dr. Schneider is certified in Neuroscience for Clinicians through PESI and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing through National Trauma Services. In short, she is a remarkably qualified person when it comes  to dealing with stressful situations and emotions. We have a tremendous conversation about how we can all deal with stressful situations better and more productively, making sure we don't stay in that stressed state for too long and realising that we might not control the situation but, with a bit of help, we can control our response and make our life easier for ourselves. We are talking the power of the mind when it comes to stress but even when it comes to things like weightloss and athletic performance and post-partum recovery.I would highly recommend reading Frazzlebrain, it's a great read, and Dr Gina has a gift for explaining these concepts in a clear and engaging way.You can find her in all the usual spaces; Her websiteFacebookInstagramRemember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. Stop exercising when "doming" and " Intermittent fasting increases risk of death by 30%"???????
On this week's episode I answer a question about "doming" of the stomach during exercise. Should you "STOP IMMEDIATELY!", as so many physios tell you to? Or could there maybe be more than 1 type of doming/reason for doming and can you "push through"? Is it really as black and white as some "post-natal professionals" tell you it is?Also this week, from the tremendous source of news that is the Daily Mail (yucky);A study that shows Intermittent Fasting comes with a 30%(!!!) increased chance of death??Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. Intermittent fasting, Keto diet and High salt..new studies. And Magic Bullets!
On this week's episode I talk about 3 studies that came out recently;"Intermittent Fasting decreases the chances of Alzheimers". I get on this before Michael Mossley decides to quote it in his next Daily Mail article."Keto diet increases pancreatic cancer survival" One for all the "keto-fans" out there. and "High salt intake increases stress-response".  On this week's episode I answer the, seemingly age-old, question;Should you stretch post-partum or should you strengthen? And is it good news if your muscle hurt after exercise or does it mean you're not very fit? And, a slight rant about the "best personal trainer in THE WORLD (or just your town)" nonsense that is always popular on websites and in the press.Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. Here's why you're not getting the results you're hoping for
On this week's episode I explain the main reason why you're not getting the results you're hoping for from your fitness routine or diet.Over the years I've had many conversations with clients about this. Whether it's a middle-aged executive wanting to lose weight, a recently post-partum woman wanting to fix her back-pain and diastasis recti or a tennis player wanting to improve her rotational balance, the main reason for them not getting the results they are after, in the time-frame they want to achieve them in, is the same. The importance of managing your expectations and being honest about the sacrifices you're willing to make.Get the above right and you will get the results you want.Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. Exercise does NOT work when healing diastasis recti!!! (???) The importance of good science and reading studies properly
On this week's, admittedly rather dry, episode I talk about an email someone sent me with a link to this study. The conclusion of the study "A weekly, postpartum, supervised exercise program, including strength training of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, in addition to daily home training of the pelvic floor muscles, did not reduce the prevalence of diastasis."The conclusion the person who sent me the study drew from this was that exercise does not work to heal diastasis recti. Now though that might seem a similar conclusion to what the study came to, I'll explain why it really isn't.I also touch on what kind of study it is and why I'm not particularly keen on studies of this kind (the term waste of time and money springs to mind ;).Having said that, the study is sound, it's just "the wrong kind of study" (in my opinion)..but it's important that people who read a study such as this understand what they are actually looking at.Here is another study that I mentioned in this episode that has a similar issue. I also briefly touch on another email that I recieved asking about the effects of Relaxin on post-partum recovery, especially diastasis recti, and why I don't agree with people who say that it plays such a big part that you can't recover from diastasis recti until a few months after the Relaxin has left your body. And here is another study that I mentioned about the Linea Alba and what "the gap" usually isAll in all the subject matter might be a bit dry but I promise you it's a good one to listen to, especially if you're a fitness professional, physio or just hang out on "mommy-forums" a lot, because this will hopefully clear a lot up :)Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. Stop overthinking your diastasis recti..and stop being scared!
On this week's episode I talk about what I believe is one of the biggest problems in your post-natal recovery; Fear. And especially "The fear of making things worse".By far most of the emails I get refer to this in one way or another."What if I make my diastasis worse?""I am told I can't do X exercise because my stomach will rip open" "The physio told me not to lift anything, including my toddler"The fitness industry, especially the post-partum fitness industry, is selling you this idea that you have to be scared or disgusted all the time."BE CAREFUL OR YOU'LL NEVER RECOVER!""DON'T CARRY YOUR BABY ON YOUR HIPS OR YOU'LL MAKE YOUR DIASTASIS WORSE!""DIASTASIS IS A LIFELONG CONDITION.....so keep giving me your money"."I know you don't like your post-partum belly but you gave birth and that's a beautiful thing" is a wonderful "negging" thing to do that makes you think you should feel unhappy with the way you look and it's something a lot of post-partum exercise providers like to use.Though there are of course certain things you have to be aware of when trying to heal your diastasis/pelvic floor or any other post-partum issues that is not the same as being scared or digusted.Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. Diastasis; The Depth of the gap is more important? And "Does diastasis cause digestive issues?"
On this week's episode "The depth of the gap is more important than the width!" is a common phrase you hear these days from "diastasis recti professionals" but is it actually true? Can diastasis recti cause digestive issues? One "diastasis specialist" claims it could "because muscles aren't working properly and you need muscles to move food through the digestive tract". Let's talk about this a bit because a LOT of women have digestive issues post-partum and, obviously, a lot have diastasis as well. But are they linked??The importance of picking your goal and focusing ONLY on that. I talk about a client with a shoulder injury whom I started working with this week."In the news this week"; This from the Daily Mail (one of the go-to websites for people about health related news, which is a bit of a shame to be honest). A soup and shake diet to beat Type 2 Diabetes. A good idea? "The poor don't exercise anyways", "Plan your training around your time of the month?" and much more
On this week's episode I talk about the corporate day that I attended which was a bit of an eye-opener with regards to some things. But first;  A lovely statement I heard from a  wellness/healthcare provider when asked why they charge soo much and their "pay in installment" option is soo much more expensive since that means women with less money can't afford their rehab package; "Poor people won't do the exercises anyways"....and their explanation was actually worse than that sounds! I talk ergonomic chairs and keyboards Vs exercise. Why your insurance company would be better off including post-partum rehab exercise in their offering, and why they don't. Then I talk about an email which I received which asked which shakes I recommended for post-partum women, and generic weightloss advice for PP women. Many more questions answered; Weight loss, F45 classes, the many kinds of diastasis recti and Belly dancing to train your core?
On this week's episode I repond to more questions that came in on the back of last week's episode.I mentioned diet and how to do it. I go into a bit of depth about how my approach to weightloss is different depending on the clients and their starting point. Personalising your approach to diet is the key to success, whether you want to lose weight or get healthier.I also talk a bit about the many variations of diastasis recti and why no two cases are generally the same. Are F45 classes safe to do post-partum? I had to figure out what F45 was first tbh.And "Is belly dancing a good way to train your core"?I briefly mention the MASIC foundation, who do amazing work for women who have suffered from severe perineal  injuries during birth, (OASI (Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury)) .And "In the news this week" a study I wanted to mention last week about the rise in early onset cancers in people. (Cancer in the under 50s). A fascinating look into the rise in cancer numbers but not just because of the increase in numbers but the link between the foods we eat and the increase in cancer risk the study claims there is. Not the happiest of subjects, I'll grant you, but an important thing to understand so I'll have a look and see if the study is one to take seriously, or if it's "one of those studies". Maximise your social impact on this world. Interview with Philantrophy expert Sharon Schneider
Have you ever questioned whether your day to day actions align with your values?Do you give to charity but wonder if there's more you can do to have a positive impact in the world?  Not by giving money but by making those small changes in your life that will have an overwhelmingly positive impact, much more so than donating some money here and there, Are you keen to teach your children just how they can make the world a genuinely better place? Well then you are in luck! This week I have the absolute pleasure of talking to Sharon Schneider. And I don't mind telling you this is one of the most powerful talks I've had over the past few years.Sharon is an entrepreneur, a philanthropy expert, an impact investor, and a strategist who advises socially conscious founders and family offices. She has overseen more than $1.5 billion in philanthropic capital deployed through grants, impact investments, advocacyefforts, and business operations from some of the world’s most prominent families, including members of the Giving Pledge, the Forbes 400 wealthiest individuals, top-ten US private foundations, and others. In other words, Sharon is the person to speak to about this sort of thing. Her insight is phenomenal and the ideas she brings to the table will, no doubt, have you inspired to make some small changes that will have a HUGE impact in the world around you.Sharon's book "Handbook for an integrated life" is available nowYou can find Sharon on Twitter, where all the cool kids hang out.And LinkedIn In the news this week; This interesting study from the Max Planck Institute in Germany that found that a 1 hour walk in nature has a causal effect when it comes to destressing the brain.Playing us out; "When love comes my way" by The Dandelions

Your child can be a wonderful public speaker! Interview with Brenden Kumarasamy
In this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking to Brenden Kumarasamy about an essential skill that most children, and adults, are not actually taught in school!Public speaking and effective communication is essential for anyone who wants to get anything done in life and yet it is a skill not taught in schools or indeed at home. You might know Brenden from the Mastertalk YouTube channel. He has coached CEOs at the highest level and is one of THE go-to people to talk to about this sort of thing.Brenden very kindly took an hour out of his day to talk to me about this.We discussed what exactly the education system is getting wrong when it comes to this? Why presentations in schools don't make your child a better speaker. How to become a better speaking and effective communicator. How parents can support their children in this. How to communicate boundaries to your children. And how to become a better communicator yourself and advance your career. If you, like I, want to become a better communicator or improve your child's communication and public speaking skill I highly recommend you check out Brenden's website here where you will find a free courseIn the news this week; This embarrasing article by Yvonne Roberts in the Guardian. I talk about my issue with "feminists" who spend their entire time talking down to other women. Apologies, I do say "shit" a lot in this segment as it REALLY gets my goat when "newspapers" publish pieces that do nothing but denigrate women. Don't get me wrong, we all expect the Daily Mail to do it but for The Observer to publish articles like this is disgraceful.Playing us out; "Walking in Manhattan" by Fabio Poian..just a little jazz ditty

She’s also the founder of a virtual meditation school called Yoga For You.  And she has the best voice in the business! We are talking about micro-habits. Small changes you can make to your daily routine that will have an immediate impact on your health. She also explains that you don't need to take hour-long Yoga and meditation classes to feel better, the science says 10 minutes is enough. We also touch on how yoga is more than a class you take for exercise and aesthetic reasons. And much, much more.Listening to Kelly is a treat and I'm sure you'll want to jump onto her podcasts about 2 minutes into this interview but if you could hang around til then end that would be appreciated :)Her websiteInstagramFacebookDefinitely check out her Spotify playlist which has 6 hours of full yoga nidra practices from her podcastIn the news this week; this interesting study that gives an insight into why parents from a poorer background might be more tempted to give their kid's poorer quality food/fast food/treats etc. This is a fascinating take as it shows that the parents give their kid's junkfood/treats to compensate for healthier "rewards" that they are not able to afford. IOW, parents might not be able to take their kids hiking, or join a sports club, due to the cost involved but a compensation for missing out on those healthy activities could be a burger or something. I'll delve into the study a bit as it really is something easily missed.Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. This is all part of a rather worrying trend where politicians, of all parties and all sexes, are happy to slowly strip women's independence away from them. Running as post-partum exercise. Why it's a terrible idea and The NHS sucks, it just does.
In this week's episode I talk about running as post-partum exercise and why it's not the best idea in the world. Here's the previous episode I refer to when talking about the interview I did with Jessica Marie Rose LeggioI also talk about my pet peeve with the NHS website and diastasis recti. In short, they are full of s**t when they say that " The separation between your stomach muscles will usually go back to normal by the time your baby is 8 weeks old. " Their overall exercise advice is also pretty terrible and the "stomach exercise" they refer to is just the core-breath..but slightly worse and terribly explained Overall the NHS website is terrible, much like the NHS itself, when it comes to giving post-partum women advice. No "in the news this week" so it's a nice short one.Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. Knee pain with diastasis recti? Relaxin and diastasis recti And "plastic food bowls cause cancer!"
In this week's, nice and brief, episode I talk about some of the basics of post-partum exercise such as "how diastasis recti can cause knee-pain."I also touch on the idea that diastasis recti can not be healed, or is more difficult to heal, when you're still breastfeeding "because of Relaxin". The role of Relaxin on post-partum recovery has not been established AT ALL but this "wisdom" is now doing the rounds on all the support forums.I also  highlight a very important thing that last week's guest (Court Garfoot) pointed out. Kefir, and other pro-biotics, do very little when your overall diet is horrible. So I spend some time talking about that. In the news this week; I talk about an interesting study about "the carcinogenic effects of heating plastic bowls" as it highlights the importance of actually reading the study rather than the  headlines. The importance of the basics. "This exercise feels too easy" and "how bread makes you fat!"
In this weeks episode I am talking about the importance of getting the basics right.I had an email where someone asked how to tighten up the bit below her bellybutton and when I mentioned exercises that could help (such as the TVA leg raises that are part of the HPNB program) she said "Yes, I can easily do them and they don't help".This reminded me of the importance of getting the basics right. In this case, it means exerting enough pressure on the legs to make sure the TVA kicks in properly. If we ignore the basics everything else falls apart, so let's go over the basics of post-partum recovery.Read the label this week; The sneaky way my choice of bread was making me gain weight!Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. I also highlight this accompanying article which shows that, unremarkably, post-partum health is still completely ignored even when people in the health sector make up a list of "top 4 ways". Exercise during pregnancy and how a small change makes a HUGE difference for weightmanagement
This week I talk about exercise during pregnancy and answer 4 questions I get asked a lot ;What can you do? What can you not do?What should you do?And, what should you NOT do?I also go into metabolism and weightmanagement/weightloss. A lot of people keep making the fundamental mistake that they don't understand just how big of a difference a small change in metabolism really makes.I will show you how for a lot of people an extra 100 calories, burned or consumed, actually means the difference between being obese or being at their target weight. In the news this week  I talk about period trackers for athletic performance. So Jessica Ennis-Hill has added a period tracker to her app and she thinks you should to. Is she right?Should you use a period tracker to schedule your training or is there a better, and much simpler, way? My experience of pregnancy, labour and early post-partum stages as a paraplegic mother. Interview with Ryan Rae Harbuck
This week I had the absolute pleasure of talking to Ryan Rae Harbuck. She's the author of "When I grow up, I want TO BE A CHAIR", mother of 2, swim coach and a paraplegic. She talks to me about her experience of being pregnant, giving birth and early post-partum stages whilst being a paraplegic. It's an astonishing insight in a world which, most able-bodied, people would never even be able consider. From being told that she would not be able to feel contractions, to weekly "are we almost there yet" check ups that turned out maybe not to be quite regular enough and a traumatic post-partum experience after the birth of her first son, to the birth of her second. She shares some tips to make life a bit easier for other mums who are in a wheelchair and is overall a phenomenal story teller. This is the FREEWHEEL extension she mentions in the interview. I am sure other suppliers are available. You can find Ryan every where. Her website Instagram and FacebookYou can find her book at all major retailers, including Amazon, by going to this page and selecting your favourite retailer. In the news this week  I talk about an experience one of my clients had with NMN. I have addressed NMN supplementation before and my client's experience highlights the issue I raised before about dosage. You, and you alone, are responsible for your, and your children's, health. Nobody else is as invested as you are.
This week I start talking about The UK government's, rather shameful, decision to delay the ban on multi-buy deals of shitty food (and related advertising). And this leads me to the subject of personal responsibility for your own health; YOUR choices are the things that affect YOUR health the most. I quote from Dr Morgan Levine, a scientist at Yale, in the above bit. You can read a Guardian interview with her hereAnd, of course, as a parent; your choices also have abig impact on your child's happiness and well-being. So what simple things can you do to make sure you are doing the best you can any given day and help your child be as healthy as they can be.In the news this week; I also talk about a study I came across that shows that taking Ibuprofen, and other anti-inflammatory drugs, may INCREASE the chances of chronic pain. So be careful with that stuff!! The same does NOT go for paracetamol, aspirin etc. so you seem to be better off taking that.
