Show cover of The Immigrant Experience in America

The Immigrant Experience in America

Are you a professional new to the United States and struggling to monetize the expertise you brought across the seas – struggling with your skills going to waste? Are you feeling misunderstood and out of touch because you are struggling to understand the unstated rules of the American culture? What if you could hang out with new Americans, new immigrants who are busy professionals, hear about their experiences and advice, then take an insight or two to inspire your own journey as a new resident or American? That’s what we do each week on The Immigrant Experience in America hosted by Simone W. Johnson Smith –– mother of Saige, wife of Jimmy, former U.S. Diplomat, Life Coach, Creative and Activator –– every episode is an in-depth look at the positive contributions immigrants are making to the American culture, marketplace and life.  I was inspired to start this podcast by my own experience as an immigrant American who legally migrated to the United States but yet has frequent experiences of a love-hate relationship of America with its immigrant population and as a result of a larger vacuum surrounding the positive contributions of immigrants to American Life. We will sit down with successful immigrant Americans to discuss how they navigated the complexity of being an immigrant-American to achieve their American Dream. This is a spot for us to get real - peel back the layers, if you will, of what it means to be an immigrant in America. Our intention is to serve as a bridge from your culture to the American culture – giving you a roadmap of tools and language to understand the unstated rules of the American culture.

Summie Yeung is a Life & Career Transition Coach, dedicated to empowering multicultural people in English-speaking countries to break free from traditional career paths and cultural expectations. Summie's immigrant journey began when she was 15, when she arrived in the UK from Hong Kong without her parents. She started her career with the conventional path of securing a stable job in technology consulting. Amidst turbulence at her last workplace, she read the book "Third Culture Kids," which illuminated the impact of cultural identity on career choices. This realization, coupled with her own career dissatisfaction, led her to seek coaching and eventually become a coach herself.   In this episode, we explored Summie's immigrant story, the cultural challenges that she encountered, and the learnings that she's harnessed, looking back to the biggest risk she has taken at the age of 15. Summie is passionate about the common experiences of immigrants, and has developed the “Counter-Cultural Method”: a 3-step process to enable multicultural people to assess cultural contexts, explore personal and cultural identities, and take practical action.   Summie has offered a free gift to our listeners, which is available on this link:   https://www.summieyeung.com/gift   You can also reach her using the following methods:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/summieyeung/ Instagram: @summiecoach.me Website: www.summieyeung.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to The Immigrant Experience in America on YouTube:  https://bit.ly/3OmWxJZ  Get More of The Immigrant Experience in America Official Site: https://bit.ly/3OmWAWg    Listen on: Google: https://bit.ly/3OorihJ  Apple Podcast: https://apple.co/3OK7xCN  Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3DKXsiE  Amazon: https://amzn.to/43VG4Cn    Support our Patreon: https://bit.ly/3KwUiTz   Connect with Simone!   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100077396568671 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simonewjohnson/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theimmigrantexperiencepodcast/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theimmigrantexperience   If you’re an immigrant who wants to share their unique journey apply now for our podcast interview series! They are always late! They are slaves to the clock! Joseph Shaules and Yvonne van der Pol explore cultural stereotypes about time. They discuss Edward Hall’s monochronic time and polychronic time, the embodied and embedded nature of time, and Ishita Ray shares her experiences with time logics in India. And you can take a quiz to test your own time logic! Feed drop from The Deep Culture podcast from the Japan Intercultural Institute. These episodes will help you understand culture shock and the disorientation that happens during the immigrant experience.  In this episode, Joseph and Yvonne discuss the “Oz Moment”—the experience of wonder and surprise that comes from first experiencing the sights, sounds and sensations in a foreign place. This episode explores the mental processes that lead to Oz Moment experiences. We hear from Ayako, who had a life-changing experience when she stepped into the restroom at LAX. Oz moments teach us a lot about how our mind works when we have intercultural experiences.   See the Japan Intercultural Institute podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/5ZmS6uFibtnpFSYycinmOX?si=1GK0R7BpQ5KNHXRCkPIgTQ

We are taking a break from our regularly scheduled episodes.  This week I will be presenting a signature talk about my forthcoming book, "Come Home to Yourself: An Immigrant Experience Decoding America, Fall 2024" at the London Intercultural Institute, EmpowerHer 2024. March 7-8, 2004. The event will be streamed live on LinkedIn.  Registration for Zoom closes today., March 6. I will present at 1:15 p.m. EST.  https://londoninterculturalcenter.co.uk/empowerher-2024 Feed Drop: Deep Culture Podast, Episode 5. In this episode, hosts Yvonne van der Pol and Joseph Shaules reflect on a question they were asked during a Brain, Mind and Culture Masterclass: Where is culture in the brain? They say that there is no specific location for culture in the brain. To understand the way that culture shapes our minds, we need to remember: three brains, two minds, and one person. The three brains refer to brain structures that reflect our evolutionary past—the “reptile brain”, the “mammalian brain” and the “primate brain”. The two minds refers to the intuitive (fast thinking-pattern based) mind and the attentive (slow-thinking analytic). Despite the complexity of these cognitive systems, we experience it all simply as the self – one person. Yvonne tells a story of cross-cultural coaching—a German who feels that Dutch people interrupt too much! While the difference may be cultural, the irritation he felt was in his whole body!
