The number of resident doctors in the US who were trained abroad increased yet again in 2022, despite the ongoing pandemic. And of the more than 7,500 foreign-trained physicians, two-fifths of them were US citizens. Studying medicine abroad is an important and sometimes contentious topic to discuss. To find out more about the life of a medical doctor who left his home country to study medicine, took the US medical licensing exams, and then continued traveling as a doctor, we’ll talk with Dr. Dan Levi today. // Interviewee: Former AMBOSS medical student advisor, Dr. Dan Levi. //ECFMG: Match Shows International Medical Graduates Are Resilient and Competitive in Pursuit of U.S. Graduate Medical Education / https://www.ecfmg.org/news/2022/03/21/match-shows-international-medical-graduates-are-resilient-and-competitive-in-pursuit-of-u-s-graduate-medical-education/ Medical Education Journal: American medical students in Israel: stress and coping / https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2923.1996.tb00866.x The Times of Israel: Israel ends lucrative American medical training programs to focus on local doctors / https://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-ends-lucrative-american-medical-training-programs-to-focus-on-local-doctors/ Global Health Promotion: The impact of an international health study abroad program on university students from the United States / https://doi.org/10.1177/1757975909339766 International Journal for Equity in Health: The COVID-19 pandemic and health workforce brain drain in Nigeria / https://doi.org/10.1186/s12939-022-01789-z BMC Research Notes: The Libyan doctors' brain drain: an exploratory study / https://doi.org/10.1186/1756-0500-2-242 Sign up for a free 5-day trial at https://go.amboss.com/pod-5day-trial. Poland has one of the lowest doctor-to-population ratios in Europe. And populations across Europe continue shifting toward a majority of elderly patients being cared for by too few doctors and nurses. This combination of a physician shortage and an increasingly older population mean that being a doctor in the 5th most populous EU nation is no picnic. Today we’re talking with Dr. Ian Perera, a physician working and trained in Poland, who actually moved here from abroad. //Interviewee: Dr. Ian Perera // Archives of Medical Science: Migrations of nurses and doctors from Poland: data for the years 2014-2020 based on the sample of capital city of Warsaw / https://doi.org/10.5114/aoms.2017.69394 The Lancet: Disease burden in older Ukrainian refugees of war: a synthetic reanalysis of public records data / https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhl/article/PIIS2666-7568(22)00187-8/fulltext#%20Polityka Zdrowotna: Podwyżki wynagrodzeń w zdrowiu.
