Episode 96: The Science of Happiness Part 5: The Key to Success in Building Relationships
Does being self-absorbed make you happier?"People are happiest when they make investments in things that are beyond themselves."In the last four episodes of The Science of Happiness series (Volume 1), we focused on the science of happiness as it relates to creating purpose and deeper meaning in life. Volume 2 focuses on our fourth quarter theme of Community and Cultural Adaptation. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which launched in 1938, is the longest scientific study of happiness ever conducted. It found that people are happiest when they make investments in things that are beyond themselves. Dr. Waldinger, who now runs the study,  recommends helping kids learn about the satisfaction of being interested in others and building great relationships. The key to success in building relationships is to listen. People who are self-absorbed tend to steer a conversation back to themselves even when it's not about them. Being a good listener means listening with all four senses and asking questions. So, if you want to be happy, make sure to invest in things that are beyond yourself.In this episode, you will learn the following:1. Episode 95: The Science of Happiness: How to Create a More Purposeful and Meaningful Life Part 4
Do you want to be happier?"You now have the knowledge and the power to take control of your own happiness. By doing that, you can help but make the world a better place."I stopped reading the newspaper and started reading a good book in the morning. It made a huge impact in our lives. If you aren't a reader, there is another way. In a 2004 study, participants wrote for 20 minutes each day for three days about either a positive life experience or a control topic. Writing about positive experiences led to higher level of happiness, improved physical health and increased focus for up to six weeks after the writing exercise. In a 2019 study, researchers at the University of Cambridge found that positive memory activation dampened cortisol responses and improved mood. She wanted to start exercising, but she didn't know the benefits of exercise. She was surprised to know that Dawn exercises 2 hours every day. In part three, Dawn  shares another part of her morning routine.A National Institute of Health study found that exercise is effective in reducing mortality and in treating symptoms of major depression. Exercise is underutilized by clinicians. Big Pharma doesn't write prescriptions for exercise because they don't make money from it.  Ageism is the worst excuse to not prescribe exercise.A regular exercise practice will increase your level of happiness. He has since sold his business and is now doing fun things that bring him purpose and meaning. He recently took a trip to Cozumel to dive and do underwater photography for fun. He also has some book projects that he is working on.After five years of working in a dive business in Mexico, he decided to sell the business. He was a PADI Dive Master/Instructor. The business requires a boat and requires a lot of time and effort. It's a business that requires employees, insurance, taxes and a sole proprietor. This year the turtle farm in Isla Mujeres, Mexico was taken back by the government, probably due to mismanagement.  The new director of environment and ecology needed volunteers to help with the conservation efforts previously managed by the Tortuga Farm. Jim has been diving with the turtles during mating season off the south tip of the island for eight years and has been taking pictures of them turtles are an endangered species in Mexico they lay a lot of eggs on the beaches.  He realized they needed a lot of help, particularly someone to  to manage the effort. Episode 87: Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement
In this episode Dawn provides an overview and results of a recent released study, Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement.  Age Wave and Edward Jones surveyed more than 11,000 North American adults, largely pre-retirees and retirees, to explore how the journey of retirement unfolds, the patterns of people’s experience in retirement, and the keys to thriving along the way. Some highlights include: Today’s retirees appreciate their longevity and they now count the ideal length of retirement at an average of 29 years. The majority now view retirement as “a new chapter of life,” while only a quarter still think of it as the traditional “time for rest and relaxation.”  Retirees who are thriving today were well-prepared for entering this stage of life and made more focused preparation.The Work/retirement lines have blurred. There is no clear definition of when retirement starts, and 59% of retirees and pre-retirees said an ideal mix of work and leisure in retirement includes some work. Support the show

Episode 83: Independence Day: How Crisis Creates Breakthroughs
Ten years ago, no one in the United States thought a civil war was a possibility, much less talked about it. In recent polls, nearly 50% of Americans think a civil war is coming.  For over 240 two years, America was a shining example to the world of how the peaceful transition of power works in a democracy.  The Shining Beacon on the Hill sadly has lost its luster. Hopefully it will not only be restored so there can be a more perfect union, and America may once again set a good example for the rest of the world. The good news is that voter participation is up dramatically since the late 1990s. The bad news: historically it has taken war to solve society’s big problems. Even if you decide not to leave the United States, it may still be prudent to move some of your assets out of the country. Having a Plan B is very wise, even if you never implement it. One of my mentors, John Addison said: "if it's easy, it's sleazy." He was onto something, because I see it all the time now that I'm out of the network marketing industry. People try to sell me on get-rich-quick schemes, but I know better. I know that there's always a price to pay for everything in life. Take inflation, for example. Episode 80: How to fall in love with your work to live in purpose and prosperity.
Aristotle used  "eudaimonia" to describe the highest good humans can strive toward – to describe a life ‘well lived’. Some translate it as ‘happiness’. For Aristotle, it meant practicing virtues like courage, wisdom, good humor, kindness, and moderation. Perhaps "flourishing" or "prosperity" is a better word. They conjure an image of one who’s successful, healthy, and enjoys a good life, and perhaps a bit of good fortune.The Japanese have an ancient but familiar concept called “ikigai”. It means “a reason to get up in the morning” or more eloquently “waking up to joy”. Episode 75: Embracing an Economic Satisfaction Lifestyle
FIRE stands for, financial independence retire early.  The movement started a little over a decade ago, some books were written about the concept and then the millennials really climbed onboard. A big part of it is that people are really frustrated  - that has lead to The Great Resignation.  We just don’t want to have to work at a job (they hate) forever and never be able to retire.  There are a lot of factors that have made it popular, but, as you look closer at the core philosophies, for most people, it's probably not going to work. Dawn strongly disagrees with a lot of the FIRE's underlying principles. Episode 74: Investing in Foreign Real Estate: Buying a Vacation Rental
Lisa Godfrey-Hayes had a passion for travel, even though she had never left Alabama.  Some of her medical industry colleagues worked in Saudi Arabia. She decided to apply, and was hired. She found herself leaving the country for the very first time - to work abroad on a two year contract.  Afterward, her budding itch to travel was in full bloom.  Lisa heard about Isla Mujeres, Mexico on a " Beach Bargains" tv show and knew she had to go check it out. After visiting numerous times - with trips to other locations sprinkled in - she rented an apartment for a year.  Still working and living in the US, Lisa traveled as often as she could, renting the apartment to friends and others when she wasn't there. It was a great "beta test" before taking the plunge and buying her own oceanfront condo. It was a hot mess, but she saw the potential.  After a $20-25K makeover it's a gorgeous, cash flowing vacation rental and Lisa's future retirement home.Support the show (

Episode 70: Co-opting Culture: How Sugar Kills in Mexico Without Warning
When Social Worker Karen Rosenberg and a business partner hosted yoga retreats in Isla Mujeres, Mexico they befriended a young man in his mid 30's who died unexpectedly from undiagnosed diabetes. She decided to take action when another local woman ended up in a diabetic coma and founded the Isla Diabetes Clinic.  Karen and co-director Giovanni have hosted free clinics that drew 500 people to get tested, receive nutritional counseling and supplies. Mexico has a diabetes epidemic, estimates are that about 60 percent of the population has undiagnosed diabetes.
