Alyson and Ona Gritz (author of, most recently, a memoir entitled Everywhere I Look and a YA Novel in Verse, Take a Sad Song) discuss a moment in the film adaptation of Judy Blume’s beloved book, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. The moment they discuss is when Rachel McAdams’s character, Barbara, notices a bird out the window and is struck by creative inspiration only to be interrupted by the doorbell. This moment speaks to both Ona and Alyson and really anyone who is trying to balance a creative life with all of the concerns of everyday life. Ona and Alyson have a beautiful discussion about the book and movie and how this adaptation created a world and a character arc for Barbara and what a welcome addition that was. Alyson and Jackie Tempera (writer for Women’s Health and storytelling coach) talk about an iconic scene from The Real Housewives of New Jersey (RHONJ): Teresa flips a table at the Last Supper. They get into the nitty gritty of what makes the whole Real Housewife world engaging and dip into Jackie’s set visit and how that informed her opinion of the show and the fandom. Surprisingly, this is the first time we’ve discussed a reality show on Fine Cut and now I want to do it again. Fine Cut with Ria Carrogan and Kim RoweAlyson, Ria and Kim discuss the “Are You There Moriarty?” Scene from One Day (episode 9) starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod. Dex (Leo Woodall) goes to visit his incredibly posh girlfriend’s family and ends up getting pulled into a family game of “Are You There Moriarty?” that ends poorly when Dex crosses the invisible line that always exists in games and power dynamics, but is almost impossible to decipher, especially if you are an outsider. Alyson approached Kim and Ria about joining her to discuss this scene because she’s never watched something that illustrates, so perfectly, the cruelty, in some families, that is disguised as fun. The scene takes many fascinating turns and reveals so much about the characters and their lives. They had a wonderful time chatting about it. Please join us!
