True Justice with Judge John Reilly
In 1977, John Reilly became the youngest person ever appointed as an Alberta Provincial Court Judge. After twenty years on the bench, he began to notice a disproportionate number of indigenous accused appearing in his court and resolved to learn the reasons for this overrepresentation. Through his research he discovered information about residential schools, treaties, poverty and dispossession, and the intergenerational impact this had on indigenous peoples.Equipped with this knowledge and a corresponding shift in perspective, John began to apply a more progressive lens to his role in order to address the issues of bias and systemic racism so rampant within the justice system. He quickly realized that he was working within a broken system, and that the establishment was resistant to change. After thirty-three years on the bench, he became so disillusioned with the Canadian criminal justice system, he resigned his position more than ten years before retirement would have been mandatory.John is now a public speaker, writer, and advocate for transforming the justice system and creating better understanding between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. In this episode:1. “Where is Michael Now?” with Monica Kunzekweguta
Originally from Zimbabwe, Monica Kunzekweguta moved to England when she was 23 years old and worked in the supportive living, mental health care sector, for 21 years. On her first shift, she was assigned to work at a home for children who had been taken away from their parents because of abuse. There, she met an eight-year-old boy named Michael, and formed an instant bond with this child who would forever change the way she viewed the world. Years later, she encountered this young man again, and saw first-hand how the system had failed him. To this day she wonders what happened to this young man, who was set upon the world with little to no life-skills, in an environment full of harsh judgement and little compassion or understanding. Monica now lives in Canada, and has published four anthologies. As a writing coach, and co-founder of Authors Without Boundaries, she is sharing the healing power of the written word. Answering the Call with Ariana Brackenbury
With the state of the world as it is, we hear the word “resiliency” a lot lately. Having lost her husband, her business, her home, and her life savings, resiliency only scratches the surface of what has defined Ariana’s journey to reinvent herself. With the majority of the things she had considered important lost to her, she decided to go on an adventure. First to Ireland, then to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain, and then to experience Bali. During her “Drink, Pray, Love” pilgrimage, she realized it was more than merely a physical journey she was walking. She was being called to shift her focus from a more conventional journey to one of leading pilgrimages, providing transformational coaching, and speaking to audiences eager to hear her message. Her current passion is working to unveil the new consciousness that is surfacing, and using it to help heal the masculine/feminine hearts and the patriarchal structures that are impacting us and the planet we live on. Soul Healing of The b. Class with Tara Newbigging
When Tara finished her schooling in Sudbury, Ontario, she set her sights on working in corporate health and wellness, but quickly found that wellness in the corporate world was often an afterthought, and didn’t fit into the standard 9 to 5 routine. She decided to change direction and started to work at a local gym in her home town doing personal training, and sales and marketing. A short time later, the opportunity to move to the Northwest Territories arose. The moment she stepped into her new community she felt energized by the possibilities. Her soul was calling to her and she decided to listen. Colliding music, emotions, dance, and fitness she took a leap of faith, and decided to offer a new kind of class. Her jaw dropped to the floor as she noticed she had 50 people lined up down the hallway ready to get their groove on. Tara quickly realized using music to help people move their bodies, spark joy, release emotions, and start them on the road to healing was her calling. Her class is not just an exercise class, it’s an experience that involves the shedding of self and rebuilding layer by layer. Her story is one of finding your purpose and using the gifts that you have been given to start a movement. In this episode: 1. The origins of The b. Class (1:02). 2. Using music and movement to raise your vibration (6:12). 3. Letting your tears wash away what no longer serves you (9:58). 4. The gifts, the talents, the calling (12:49). 5. The business model – bigger than just me (14:33). 6. Moving online… would a global pandemic stop the movement? (16:57). 7. It’s not about the exercise (22:01). 8. Collaboration and bringing The b. Class to the world (25:24). 9. Letting life show you the way (29:09). 10. Coaching, branding, and building confidence (32:05). Capturing Intrinsic Beauty with Alexis McKeown
When sorting through a number of family photographs early in her career, Alexis McKeown noticed that a very important person was missing from many of the pictures. Her mother had taken a good number of the photos so that explained why she wasn’t in all of them, but she had also tossed away many of the photographs that she thought didn’t capture her in a flattering light. This lit a fire under Alexis to challenge the conventional beauty standards that had caused her mother to remove herself from this mountain of memories because of a misguided belief she was no longer photo-worthy. From that moment, Alexis knew what her focus would be in her photography career and she made a vow to prove to her clients that they are uniquely beautiful and deserve to exist in photos. The impact Alexis McKeown is making on her clients and future generations is noteworthy and her stunning works have been featured throughout the Bow Valley and across Canada. Living a Fuller Life with Michelle Fuller
A chance encounter brought me a new friend. Only moments later we are laughing with each other as old friends do, sharing a special moment. I’ve known her for five minutes and a thousand years.I didn’t ask why she has a dressing over her right eye or is it her left? It doesn’t matter - I barely notice. What I see in my new-found old friendship is a force of strength. Positive, exciting, adventurous. Above all, a love for life that is taken with a fierce need to experience all there is….before time takes away her choice. Shouldn’t we all live with such bravery? We too will walk this path in time.Through her energy, I am reminded to slow my life down. I am reminded of what is important. Do I always do that? Not a chance. I am caught up in being human. At times I take what I have for granted. I work too much, I judge others, I worry about things that aren’t worrying things. That’s when luck happens to walk by me and I receive a teaching moment. I am fully aware our lives are different by circumstance alone. It’s not lost on me that perhaps her worries overshadow mine. Someone has joined me on my journey to teach. Lessons learned. To fight with grace, honesty, bravery, humour and love. Her stories of hiking, skiing, travel and love; always told with a smile and an energy that I dig for often. Never does she complain of the struggle she must endure daily. She has shared her journey with us through her book “A Fuller Life”. It is the story of a loving spirited woman whose battle comes with a smile and much love. I am grateful to call her my friend. In this episode:1 - How an act of service in childhood unexpectedly came full circle (Introduction).2 - The importance of being relentless when advocating for your own health (2:11).3 - Facing the unknown, adjusting to a new normal, and finding hope again (5:00).4 - An unexpected surprise found in the pursuit of pain management (10:00).5 - Thirteen years later… the key to persevering when the unthinkable happens (14:00).6 - The powerful benefits of sharing your story (18:00).7 - Moving through the fear and choosing to live life with purpose, passion, and gusto (23:00).8 - The impact of paying it forward (27:30).9 - Final thoughts on the importance of perspective (30:09).Connect with MichelleIf you would like to order Michelle Fuller's book please email her at michelleferg@gmail.com.
