Laurell nació en Vancouver el 20 de abril de 1979. Como poetisa líricamente segura de sí misma, se ganó sus méritos ante todo como compositora y autora de canciones para varias candidaturas a Eurovisión. Tras sus primeros temas para las artistas británicas Holly Brewer ("I Wish I Loved You More") y Olivia García ("Freedom Hearts") en 2017, que al menos llegaron a las rondas preliminares del internacionalmente codiciado concurso musical, la canción "Stones" (2018) para la banda indie suiza ZiBBZ es la primera canción de la pluma de Laurell que participa en la ronda final. La artista afincada en Suecia también recibió un premio Juno en la categoría de Mejor Grabación Dance del Año en 2018 por su contribución al tema de Nick Fioricci "Closer" . en 2019, consiguió lo que ninguna otra mujer había hecho antes: Laurell consiguió colar tres canciones en la ronda final del Festival de Eurovisión - incluyendo "You Got Me" del cantante suizo Luca Hänni, que alcanzó el 4º puesto final. Barker también se estableció como solista en 2021. Con su single de debut "Habit" , la canadiense se posiciona como una talentosa intérprete de dance-pop.
