Janis Darlene Martin, born on March 27, 1940 in Sutherlin, Virginia, was a rockabilly and country music singer. She began singing and playing guitar before age six. At 15, she signed with RCA Victor in March 1956, releasing her debut single "Will You Willyum" backed by "Drugstore Rock 'n Roll", which sold 750,000 records. Martin performed on shows like American Bandstand and The Today Show and was dubbed the "Female Elvis" for her stage presence. RCA Victor dropped her in 1958 due to teenage pregnancy. She resumed performing in the 1970s and toured through Europe as part of the rockabilly revival. Martin died from cancer on September 3, 2007. In 2010, the Library of Virginia honored her as a Virginia Women in History for her musical career.
