The acclaimed Italian concert pianist Maurizio Pollini has a reputation for having a flawless technique and playing with extreme precision, so much so that critics have often levelled the accusation of Pollini being cold and clinical in his delivery. Such comments are unlikely to cause the pianist too much cause for concern because he has been a top selling soloist for Deutsche Grammophon for over 40 years with a back catalogue which contains some truly outstanding performances, with his renditions of Stravinsky's 'Trois Mouvements de Petrouchka' and Prokofiev's 'Seventh Sonata' still considered recording benchmarks for classical piano.
Pollini's technique is attributed to one of his most significant mentors, the Italian maestro Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. In 2012 Pollini's immense contribution to classical music was recognised when he was inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame. Poor health has limited the artist's concert recitals during the latter part of his international career, however in 2014 he performed a series of concerts in Europe including an appearance at the Salzburg Festival.
