David Reichenberg, an American oboist born on July 13, 1950 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, began his musical journey learning flute, violin, and piano as a child. He started studying the oboe under Dr. Myron E. Russell at the University of Northern Iowa before moving to Indiana University School of Music in 1969. Reichenberg's breakthrough came when he met Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Salzburg, leading him to study baroque oboe with Jürg Schäftlein and build his own instrument. In 1977, he formed the Munich-based orchestra Florilegium Musicum and received invitations to play in England, notably with the English Concert directed by Trevor Pinnock. Reichenberg's extensive recordings include works by Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. He taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Vienna Hochschule. Reichenberg died on June 10, 1987 from complications related to AIDS.
