Nogizaka46 are a performing troupe of young Japanese singers, dancers and actresses who are part of a network of similar acts created by producer and songwriter Yasushi Akimoto. Other groups in the franchise include Keyakizaka46, Yoshimotozake46 and Hinatazaka46, groups which were set up to become 'official rivals' to bands such as AKB48, NMB48 and SKE48. The term 'rival' is subjective because all the bands operate under the control and guidance of Yasushi and the various troupes have collectively become one of the biggest-selling performance franchises in Asia, selling millions of records and generating huge revenues.
The groups are all signed to Sony Music Japan and are a dominating presence within Japan's huge and lucrative J-pop industry. Yasushi is a highly-skilled promoter with a keen eye for what will attract audiences. Nogizaka46 are part of the Sakamichi Series of groups and embody Yasushi's vision for creating idol bands which are accessible to the public. The band's name is derived from the district where they are based and the number relates to amount of performing members in each troupe. Their image is derived from Yasushi's perception of how Japanese audiences view girls who might attend a classy French high school for young ladies. These concepts might seem alien to Western audiences but the huge popularity of these troupes within their native Japan suggests Yasushi has his finger firmly on the pulse of the Japanese pop market.
