Rotary Connection was formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1967 by Marshall Chess, who recruited arranger Charles Stepney and vocalist Minnie Riperton. The groupโs first recording sessions culminated in the selfโtitled debut album Rotary Connection released in 1968, which reached the Billboard charts for 34 weeks and established the band as a pioneer of psychedelic soul. In 1968 the duo released Aladdin and Peace, the latter featuring a provocative promotional campaign that caused controversy but maintained the groupโs visibility. The 1969 album Songs continued the experimental style, while Dinner Music in 1970 showcased more subdued arrangements. The 1971 release Hey Love, credited to New Rotary Connection, marked the final studio effort before the group disbanded later that year. Throughout their career, Rotary Connection collaborated with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and toured extensively across the Midwest, achieving regional chart success and influencing the fusion of soul with psychedelic elements.
