Biography

Known for their politically provocative lyrics, Puerto Rican Latin rap band Calle 13 were formed in 2004 by step-siblings René Pérez Joglar, who uses the name Residente, Eduardo José Cabra Martínez who goes by Visitante, and Ileana Cabra Joglar also known as PG-13. They gained attention with a song that protested the killing of a Puerto Rican rebel leader and their first single 'Se Vale Tó-Tó' reached number 19 on Billboard's Tropical Songs Chart. The single 'Atrevete-te-te!' went to number six on the Tropical Chart and the accompanying video was named Best Short-Form Music Video in the Latin Grammy Awards. The two tracks featured on their eponymous debut album which went to number six on Billboard's Top Latin Albums Chart in 2005 and won them the Best Urban Music Award at the Latin Grammys, where they were also named Best New Artist. The release also was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Latin Rock, Alternative Or Urban Album.

They performed at major venues locally and in Chile, Columbia, Guatemala and Honduras and in 2007 released 'Residente o Visitante' which topped the Latin Chart, went to number 13 on the Top Rap Albums Chart and won Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards. International acclaim followed and they toured several countries including America. In 2008, 'Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo', which reached number three on the Latin Albums Chart and number 19 on the Rap Chart, 'Entren Los Que Quieran' (2010), which went to number six on the Latin Chart and number 25 on the Rap Chart, and 'MultiViral' (2014), which peaked at number four on the Latin Chart and number 22 on the Rap Chart, all earned nominations and awards at the Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards. In 2014, Residente and Vigilante said they planned to focus on their solo careers but did not rule out recording and performing together in the future.
