Biography

An inventive, eccentric singer/songwriter whose Grammy-winning music draws on jazz, new wave, and electro influences, St. Vincent creates a uniquely heartfelt style of art pop that has drawn comparisons to Talking Heads, Patti Smith, and Kate Bush. Born as Annie Clark in Dallas, TX, on September 28, 1982, she began playing guitar at the age of 12 and toured with her uncle's jazz duo Tuck & Patti before attending Berklee College of Music. She briefly joined the psychedelic rock choir The Polyphonic Spree before launching a solo career in 2006.

Taking her stage name from a Nick Cave song, St. Vincent's early albums Marry Me (2007) and Actor (2009) helped build a reputation for captivating, kooky pop. Her third full-length release, 2011's Strange Mercy, brought widespread critical acclaim, as well as a spot in the US Top 20. She went on to appear on Andrew Bird's track "Lusitania" and collaborate with David Byrne on the pair's joint album, Love This Giant, which was released in 2012.

Her eponymous 2014 record brought even more praise for its extrovert, flamboyant set of oddball synth-rock jams and reached Number 12, while 2017's Masseducation became her first Top 10 release on both sides of the Atlantic, peaking at Number 10 in America and Number 6 in the UK. She released a remixed version of the album in 2018; titled MassEducation, it featured piano-heavy versions of the album's original tracks. Three years later, St. Vincent retooled her sound once again for 2021's Daddy's Home, a wildly diverse album co-produced by Jack Antonoff.
