Jens Mahlstedt has been a pioneering force in European dance music since the late '80s, helping elevate the profile of German electronic music internationally. Among the first house DJs and producers from the continent to break into the competitive London scene, he began DJing in Berlin clubs, initially spinning hip-hop, funk, and garage before shifting toward the progressive house and trance sounds favored in northern Germany. His breakthrough came in 1994 with the widely played 12" single “Loops 'n Tings.” Mahlstedt later relocated to London, mixing Trance Nation compilations and remixing artists such as Tokyo Ghetto Pussy and Team Deep. In 1997, he teamed up with German producer Thomas Schumacher on the singles “Pressure” and “The Boost,” as well as a soundtrack for a stage adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in Bonn. The following year saw him release the acclaimed Mindcontrol, Vol. 1 compilation and the full-length Monkey Island. Throughout the '90s, he performed at major events like Mayday and Love Parade. In 2000, Mahlstedt composed scores for the art-house film Detour and a modern staging of My Fair Lady in Hamburg.
