As the voice of Queen Elsa in the Disney film Frozen, Idina Menzel became a constant soundtrack in the lives of small children and parents across the world thanks to the phenomenal success of the movie Frozen and its theme song, "Let It Go." Born on May 30, 1971, in New York City but raised in Long Island, she started singing at weddings and Bar Mitzvahs when she was 15 and, after graduating with a drama degree, landed a role in the musical Rent in 1995. Despite a belting voice and some well-crafted pop ballads, her early solo albums Still I Can't Be Still (1998) and Here (2004) made little impact, but her reputation did grow hugely when she starred as the witch Elphaba in the Broadway show Wicked and won the Tony Award for Best Actress in 2004. She co-wrote her third album, 2008's I Stand, with Alanis Morissette's songwriting partner Glen Ballard and played the part of Shelby Corcoran in the hit TV series Glee before Frozen became the highest-grossing animated film of all time in 2014. Idina Menzel's version of "Let It Go" reached Number 5 on the US singles charts and sold 11 million copies, also winning both a Grammy and an Academy Award. Simultaneously, her Christmas record Holiday Wishes peaked at Number 6 in the US. Over the following years, Idina Menzel sang about her rise to fame, her children, and her divorce on her deeply personal fifth album Idina in 2016, and issued a second holiday album titled Christmas: A Season of Love in 2019. Drama Queen, her seventh studio effort, hit the shelves in 2023.
