Biography

Shawn Colvin is an American singer-songwriter who for almost 30 years has been a firm favourite among fans of folk, country and Americana music. Several of her albums and singles have placed in the US charts and she has recorded with many great artists such as Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and James Taylor. In 2017 she released a 20th anniversary edition of her album 'A Few Small Repairs' which featured the track 'Sunny Came Home'. The album only peaked at number 39 on the Billboard 200 in 1997 but went to number 18 on the Americana/Folk Chart. The single topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary Songs Chart, went to number seven on the Hot 100 and earned her two Grammy Awards.

Born in South Dakota, she learned to play guitar as a child and sang publicly while at the University of Illinois. She played in a Western Swing band in Austin, Texas, and then moved to New York City where she joined the Buddy Miller Band. She made her solo debut on the album 'Steady On' which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording in 1990. 'Fat City' (1992) and 'Cover Girl' (1994) led to 'A Few Small Repairs'. Other albums include 'Holiday Songs and Lullabies' (1998), 'Whole New You' (2001), 'Polaroids' (2004), 'These Four Walls' (2006) and a recording of a three-night stint at Yoshi's Jazz Club in San Francisco tiled 'Shawn Colvin Live'.

Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris and other artists joined Colvin for her eighth studio album 'All Fall Down' (2012) while 'Uncovered' (2015) featured her versions of numbers by songwriters such as Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson and Graham Nash. In 2016 she paired with Steve Earle for 'Colvin & Earle' which went to number eight on Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums Chart and number 13 on the Hot Country Albums Chart. She published a memoir titled 'Diamond in the Rough' in 2012 and announced in 2017 that she and producer John Leventhal were working on a sequel to 'Holiday Songs and Lullabies', which again would be based on the children's songbook 'Lullabies and Night Songs' with music by Alex Wilder and illustrations by Maurice Sendak. She criss-crossed America on tour in the autumn of 2017 with an appearance at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, Scotland in 2018.
