Born William Leonard Roberts II in Mississippi on January 28, 1976, Rick Ross grew up between Georgia, where he studied, and Miami, the place that witnessed the beginning of his career under the early pseudonym Freeway. He was spotted by Jay-Z, who signed him to Def Jam for a series of mixtapes, one of which featured his signature track "Hustlin'." His first batch of albums, Port of Miami (2006), Trilla (2008), Deeper Than Rap (2009) and Teflon Don (2010), God Forgives, I Don't (2012) all topped the Billboard 200. Following the chart-topping album Mastermind (2014), Rick Ross followed up the same year with Hood Billionaire and Black Market, both reaching number 6 in 2015. Two years later, the artist and businessman returned with Rather You Than Me, which peaked at number 3 in the US and once again featured a star-studded lineup of guests, including Raphael Saadiq to Young Thug via Gucci Mane, Ty Dolla $ign, Future, Yo Gotti and Nas. The second volume of Port of Miami was released in 2019 and reached number 2 on the US Billboard charts. Its successor, Richer than I Ever Been, was released in 2021 and hit number 22. In 2023, Rick Ross unveiled Too Good to Be True, a joint album with Meek Mill that bowed at number 23 on the Billboard 200.
