During the early stages of their career the South Korean hip-hop group Epik High ploughed a lonely musical furrow. Critics of the band suggested that South Korean pop music audiences who had been weaned on a diet of K-Pop were not ready for lyrically complex music. For a time it seemed as if the critics were right and the band's first two albums were not a commercial success. The aptly named 'Swan Songs' released in 2005 was intended to be the band's final album and surprised critics and fans alike by bringing unexpected mainstream success to a genre which had hitherto enjoyed only a small following amongst South Korean music fans.
The band capitalised on the new-found interest in the group and released a fourth album 'Remapping the Human Soul' in 2007. The album's lyrical content dealt with subject matter which was almost unheard of in the context of Korean popular music and multiple references to sex crimes, war, religion and education led to the album being censored by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. The censorship didn't stop the album picking up multiple music industry awards during the year of its release.
Despite a two-year hiatus when two members of the band entered national service, the band has built up a large fan base and are now the county's leading hip-hop band.
