Although Leela James has yet to enjoy significant commercial success, the critics reaction to her music suggests it's just a matter of time before she graduates to the premier league of R&B performers.
She has been outspoken in her criticisms of the lyrical content of many modern R&B and hip-hop songs condemning the genre's obsession with material possessions and lack of respect for women. It's a topic she highlights in the song 'Music' lifted off her debut album 'A Change Is Gonna Come' released in 2005. James errs towards the classic, punchier style of soul singing reminiscent of some of the famed black singers of the 1960s. Her refreshingly old-school vocal delivery has drawn comparisons with R&B divas such as Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and Tina Turner. The artist's busy touring schedule appearing at jazz events as well as more conventional music festivals is building a fan base for her music across America. The single 'Set Me Free' taken off the 2015 album 'Fall for You' is her highest-charting release and reached number seven on the US R&B charts, her only top ten record to date.
