Biographie

Hailed as Malaysia's first all-female rock band, Candy formed in 1996 in Kuching, Sarawak. Guitarist Mary Morss and her younger sister, drummer Cornie Morss, assembled the group's original lineup under the short-lived band name "The Sapphire Gals." Both the lineup and the name endured multiple changes until 1996, when the group moved to Kuala Lumpur, adopted the official name name "Candy," and solidified its lineup with the addition of bassist Nancy Graggory and lead vocalist Patricia Robert. Working with producer Edrie Hashim, the quartet recorded its self-titled debut album, Candy, which went platinum upon its release in 1997. "Akan Ku Tunggu," the album's lead single, was a hit on Malaysian radio, and Candy received a nomination for "Best New Group" at the Anugerah Industri Muzik awards show in 1998. Candy's sophomore album, Hot, was released in 1999, featuring far more heavy metal textures than its predecessor as well as a more democratic approach to the band's vocal duties, which were now being shared by Patricia Robert and Nancy Graggory. Despite singing lead on multiple songs, Graggory left the band shortly after the album's release and was replaced by Jacqueline Chong. Five years later, Graggory returned to the lineup after Chong's exit in 2004. Candy's third album, Absolute, followed in 2008 and featured the band's classic lineup.
