Born on May 7th, 1968 in Spanish Town, Kingston, dancehall queen Janice “Lady G” Fyffe rose up in 1988 with her debut single, the Anchor Records-signed “Nuff Respect”. The low-slung ragga number gave misogynistic listeners a dressing-down and proved especially popular with female fans, leading to a reissue via the internationally renowned dancehall label Greensleeves Records. Topping the national charts with her follow-up single, the Papa San collaboration “Round Table Talk”, the Jamaican deejay went on to release a flurry of hits before ducking out of the limelight for a few years to raise her kids. Re-emerging on the scene in 1994, Fyffe found herself another hit in the form of 1997’s “Breeze Off”, a version of Gussie Clarke’s “Filthy” riddim. The same year, she secured a place in Danny Browne’s prestigious Main Street Crew, joining the likes of Red Rat and Buccaneer. Teaming up with labelmate Crissy D, she enjoyed more success with “Provide the Wine”, which found the two women lacing a bustling instrumental centred around steel drums. The pair went on to record another collaboration, “Girls Like Us”, in 2000, which saw them team up with UK garage production duo B15 Project. Capitalising on the national trend of the time, the song reached number seven in the UK Singles Chart, also reaching number 22 in the Netherlands and spawning a remix from UKG pioneers Artful Dodger. Continuing to record new material into the streaming era, Fyffe has since released numerous projects including the 2015 EP Smile, which was later re-released with two bonus tracks in 2019.
