Ruth Ruth was formed in New York City in 1993 by bassist and lead vocalist Chris Kennedy, guitarist Mike Lustig, and drummer Dave Snyder. The trio first attracted attention playing free sets at the Continental nightclub, which led to a contract with American Recordings and the release of their debut album Laughing Gallery in 1995, featuring the single "Uninvited" that received alternative radio play and limited MTV rotation. After touring with Everclear and No Doubt, the band left American Recordings and issued the 45‑single "Brainiac" on Deep Elm Records in 1996, followed by the EP Little Death on Epitaph Records; during this period Snyder departed and was replaced by Christian Nakata. Their next major release, Are You My Friend?, appeared in 1998 on RCA Records, with the track "Kaboom" and a song that later appeared in the film Urban Legend. In 2000 the group rebranded as Ultra‑V and released Bring on the Fuego, a stylistic departure that saw bassist Maggie Kim join for select shows. Ruth Ruth reunited in 2004 for Right About Now on Flaming Peach Records and performed a few shows before disbanding again; a live recording, Live in Toronto, was issued in 2009. The band reformed in 2016 with drummer Johnny Powers and continued to perform in the New York City area, with their song "Jerome" featured in the 2022 film Blood Relatives.
