Unbelievable Truth was formed in 1993 in Oxford, United Kingdom, by guitarist and vocalist Andy Yorke, brother of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, alongside drummer Nigel Powell, bassist Jason Moulster, and guitarist Jim Crosskey. The group’s name was inspired by Hal Hartley’s film The Unbelievable Truth. Their first single, "Building", was released in February 1997 on the Oxford‑based label Shifty Disco, marking their entry into the UK alternative rock scene. In 1998 the band issued the EP Higher Than Reason and the album Almost Here through Virgin Records, followed by the 2000 album Sorrythankyou on Shifty Disco after being dropped by the major label; the latter featured the single "Settle Down". The group toured extensively across the UK, supporting acts such as Radiohead and appearing on BBC Radio sessions. Their final performance took place at the Zodiac in Oxford on 16 September 2000, after which Andy Yorke departed and the band disbanded. Post‑disbandment, the members pursued other projects, with Nigel Powell forming The Sad Song Co. and Andy Yorke engaging in solo support concerts. Unbelievable Truth’s releases remain a reference point for early 2000s UK alternative rock, though no chart‑topper or award was achieved during their brief career.
