The Used's blend of screamo, pop-punk, and post-hardcore turned the Utah-based group into platinum-certified hitmakers during the 2000s. Fronted by vocalist Bert McCracken and formed in Orem, Utah, the band held its first practice in 2000 and released its debut single, "The Taste of Ink," in 2002. The song reached number 19 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, the first of five consecutive tracks to reach the Top 40 during the band's infancy. The band's self-titled debut album, The Used, was also released that year, reaching number 63 on the Billboard 200 and earning platinum status in the US. 2004's In Love and Death went platinum, too, and reached number 6 on the Billboard 200. The album also fared well in the UK, where three singles — "Take It Away," "All I've Got," and "I Caught Fire" — reached the Top 10 on the UK Rock & Metal Singles chart. Lies for the Liars followed in 2007 and featured the band's highest-charting hit in America, where "The Bird and the Worm" hit number 9 on Alternative Airplay. The album itself peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200, which marked the group's peak on the American album charts, as well. Lies for the Liars stalled at gold status, however, becoming the band's first release not to go platinum. Nonetheless, The Used reached the Top 10 in America with 2009's Artwork and 2012's Vulnerable, which Imaginary Enemy reaching number 14 in 2014 and The Canyon hitting number 50 in 2017. One year after the release of 2020's Heartwork, the band began recording material for a new album, which they completed in 2023 and released that summer under the title Toxic Positivity. "Giving Up", the album's first single, climbed to number 38 on the Top 40 Radio Alternative Songs chart that summer.
