René Pérez Joglar, who goes by the name Residente, is a hip-hop performer from Puerto Rico who gained fame as a member of the Latin Grammy Award-winning group Calle 13. Born on February 23, 1978, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he studied art at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, before returning home in 2003 to form Calle 13 with his step-brother Eduardo José "Visitante" Cabra Martínez. Active between 2004 and 2015, Calle 13 released five critically acclaimed full-length albums and became one of the most popular Latin urban acts in the world, winning 21 Latin Grammy Awards and three Grammy Awards. His 2017 eponymous debut album topped Billboard's World Albums Chart and went to number 3 on the Top Latin Albums Chart. It won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album and was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year. "Cantalo" (2019) with Ricky Martin and Bad Bunny peaked at number 3 on Billboard's Latin Digital Song Sales Chart, number 11 on the Latin Pop Airplay and Latin Rhythm Airplay charts, and number 35 on the Hot Latin Songs Chart. Released in 2020, the single "René" (2020) debuted at number 7 on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart and number 34 on the Hot Latin Songs Chart. In 2022, Residente made headlines by featuring on Argentine producer Bizarrap's "Residente: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 49," which was largely a diss track aimed at Colombian reggaeton superstar J Balvin. That year, he also issued the single "This Is Not America," a collaborative effort with French-Cuban duo Ibeyi that criticized the effects imperialism, colonialism, and slavery have had over Latin America. The track was included in Residente's 2024 sophomore effort Las Letras Ya No Importan alongside other singles such as "Quiero Ser Baladista," "Problema Cabrón," "Ron en el Piso," "Pólvora de Ayer," and "313." It reached number 49 on the Top Latin Albums chart in the US and number 84 in Spain.
