Luiz Melodia was an influential Brazilian singer and songwriter. He was born Luiz Carlos dos Santos on January 7, 1951, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. His music brings together elements of genres like Música popular brasileira (MPB), samba, soul, and rock. He was the son of samba musician Oswaldo Melodia, whose stage name he adopted. His musical journey began in the slums of Rio's Estácio district, known as the "birthplace of samba." He released his debut album Pérola Negra in 1973, which contained songs such as the massively popular title track. It has gone on to be known as one of the best albums in Brazil's music history. Throughout his career, Luiz Melodia released several important albums, including notable works like Maravilhas Contemporâneas (1976), Claro (1985), and Estação Melodia (2007). He also performed internationally, including appearances in France, Switzerland, and at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 2011, he was honored with the Order of Cultural Merit. In 2014, he released his final album, Zerima. That same year he also sang the Christmas song "A Nata do Natal" for the Estrelas do Natal project. The song achieved popularity and became a Christmas mainstay in Brazil. In 2015, Luiz Melodia received recognition as the Best Singer at the 26th Prêmio da Música Brasileira, highlighting his contributions to Brazilian music. He passed away on August 4, 2017, at the age of 66.
