Oliver Coates, born in 1982 in London, is a British cellist and electronic musician. He began playing the cello at age six and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Coates' early career involved collaborations with notable artists such as Massive Attack and Sigur Rós. In 2013, he released his debut album Towards the Blessed Islands. Throughout his career, Coates has worked on various film scores, including collaborations with Jonny Greenwood for Paul Thomas Anderson's films There Will Be Blood and The Master, and Mica Levi for Jonathan Glazer's science fiction thriller Under the Skin. He also contributed to Radiohead’s studio album A Moon Shaped Pool. Coates' notable solo albums include Upstepping (2016) and Shelley's On Zenn-la (2018). He is the main cellist of the London Contemporary Orchestra and lives in Glasgow, Scotland with his wife.
