Biography

Born in England to a Welsh father and a German mother, Olivia Newton-John was mostly raised in Australia, joining all-girl group Sol Four when she was 14. Winning a trip to England in a talent show, she recorded her first single Till You Say You'll Be Mine before teaming up with Australian singer Pat Carroll in the duo Pat & Olivia. Monkees creator Don Kirshner recruited her for his new project, Toomorrow and, although it flopped, it helped launch Olivia's solo career with the album If Not For You, including the singles Banks Of The Ohio and Take Me Home Country Roads. She made a big impact on the country scene in 1973 with the Let Me Be There single and album and moved to the US, enjoying a US Number 1 with I Honestly Love You in 1974. But her career rocketed when she was cast as the spandex-clad lead character Sandy opposite John Travolta in Grease. The top-grossing movie of 1978, it produced three smash hits, You're The One That I Want and Summer Nights (both with John Travolta) and Hopelessly Devoted To You. She subsequently starred in the movie Xanadu and further hits included Magic and the aerobics anthem Let's Get Physical. She stepped back from music after becoming a mother, but still released occasional albums, including Gaia: One Woman's Journey (1994) chronicling her battle with cancer.
