The power trio rock supergroup Beck, Bogart & Appice had numerous almost beginnings until finally coming together for a brief period in the 1970s. Revered guitarist Jeff Beck first met bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice in 1967, when Bogart and Appice were already signed to a label as the rhythm section for the hard rock band Vanilla Fudge. Two years later that duo were ready to add themselves to the Jeff Beck Group, but Beck sustained severe injuries in a car accident. The two formed the short-lived Cactus, instead, and finally joined a newly formed Jeff Beck Group in 1972. That band fell apart after less than ten performances, and soon Beck, Bogart & Appice began touring as a trio. They released their only studio album, 1973’s Beck, Bogert & Appice, which included a heavy rock cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”. They toured Europe and the States, prompting the release of 1973’s Live in Japan. Attempts at a second album failed before an LP materialized, though many of the completed tracks from those sessions can be found on various compilations and special editions. Bogert and Appice would later form a new trio with Rick Derringer, and Beck would remain one of the most idolized guitarists of his generation. Tim Bogert passed away January 13, 2021.
