"There were moments where I really hated myself," admits Vienna-based singer-songwriter Sophie Lindinger. "But then I thought: 'How can anyone ever love me if I don't love myself?' My new music is about learning how to fall back in love with your own shadow."
This candid assessment explains the soulful transformation that drives Sophie Lindinger's debut solo album. The intimate record takes us on a journey of heartbreak, longing, desire and renewal that you can immediately empathize with. Ultimately, Lindinger manages to reach a place where the end of a long relationship is no longer seen as merely painful, but also as a springboard for her own growth. On this record, Lindinger sings about her experiences with antidepressants, the sounds of a coffee machine, and a love that has melted away - all paired with quiet, understated music that underscores the loneliness she has experienced.
Lindinger is also a member of My Ugly Clementine, a supergroup made up of some of Austria's best female rock musicians: Mira Lu Kovacs (5KHD) and Nastasja Ronck (Sharktank). They sing feminist anthems about not washing your hair and swatting away slimy dudes like pesky flies, with Lindinger contributing via songwriting, vocals, guitar and occasional bass playing.
Their blunt 2020 underground hit "Playground" now has 2.5 million streams on Spotify. In addition to My Ugly Clementine, Lindinger has also shaped the Austrian rock landscape with the critically acclaimed duo Leyya (with Marco Kleebauer). On their releases, experimentation is everything - and yet they manage to make a wide variety of clashing elements sound harmonious.
Despite these two successful projects, it was important for Lindinger to write a solo album and record her personal development over the past years.
The so far released singles "Happy Pills," "Coffee" and "15 Years," already paint quite a clear picture: quiet, minimalist melodies mixed with Sophie's powerful vocals.
Appropriately titled, the debut album is called "Sophie Lindinger" and will be released on Feb. 10, 2023.
