French metal band Hangman's Chair was formed in Essonne in 2005. At the time, it comprised singer Keo Nakphoumin, guitarists Sid Ahmed Azzouni and Julien Chanut, bassist Bernard Quarante and drummer Mehdi Birouk Thépegnier. After a first metal sludge album shared with Parisians Eibon for the Bones Brigade label, the band recorded (A Lament for...) The Addicts (2007) and turned to stoner/doom metal. In 2008, the singer and bassist gave way to Cédric Toufouti (also guitarist) and Clément Hanvic respectively. Sid Ahmed Azzouni, who died on February 11, 2010, was replaced by Adrien Lederer on the third album Leaving Paris (2010). Since then, the line-up has remained stable around Chanut, Thépegnier, Toufouti and Hanvic, for the following albums Hope // Dope // Rope (2012), This Is Not Supposed to Be Positive (2015), which marks the band's arrival on the Music Fear Satan label, then Banlieue Triste (2018). After the Covid-19 pandemic, Hangman's Chair signs with Nuclear Blast Records and records A Loner (2022), followed by Saddiction (2025).
