Biografie

Born on April 9, 1977, in Summit, New Jersey, Gerard Way is an alternative rock singer, songwriter, musician, producer, and comic book writer best known as the front man for rock band My Chemical Romance. A fan of comic books and music in his youth, he would spend time reading comics, drawing, and listening to heavier bands such as metal icons Iron Maiden and punk groups like The Misfits. In the 1990s, he discovered British pop music bands such as The Smiths, Pulp, Blur, and others. Pursuing his interest in comic books and cartoons, he started an internship at Cartoon Network in New York. After the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001, he changed career paths and began pursuing music. Gerard Way recruited his brother Mikey Way and formed My Chemical Romance. Their 2002 debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, was a success in the US and paved the way for their Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004), which charted in the Top 40 in several countries. 2006’s The Black Parade was an international smash, hitting the Top 5 in the US, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, Austria, and several other countries. The group’s fourth album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (2010), was another success but didn’t fare as well as The Black Parade and the band went on an extended break as Gerard Way battled drug and alcohol addiction issues. My Chemical Romance officially announced their break-up in 2013, which paved the way for Gerard Way’s debut solo album, Hesitant Alien (2014). The album, which reached Number 16, was a departure from the edgier sounds of My Chemical Romance, showcasing his British pop influences. He also returned to his original career path and signed with DC Comics, creating a popular new series – The Umbrella Army – and overseeing DC’s Young Animal imprint. Gerard Way continued making music, collaborating with a variety of artists including Lydia Light, Ray Toro, Judith Hill, Thursday, Every Time I Die, Say Anything, Dedmau5, and more. In 2019, My Chemical Romance reunited for a live performance and announced a tour for 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic postponed that tour until 2022.
