Biography

Despite not achieving mainstream success throughout their ten-year career, Americana and alternative country trio Shivaree gained their fair share of attention with the song “Goodnight Moon,” which has been extensively featured on several films and TV series. Formed in 1997, the band was born from a fortunate encounter between singer-songwriter Ambrosia Parsley and guitarist Duke McVinnie, who had previously worked as a session musician for Johnny Otis and J.J. Cale. After recruiting keyboardist Danny McGough, the trio started performing under the moniker Junebug before changing their name to Shivaree, a Cajun serenade usually sung to newlyweds. Produced by award-winning singer-songwriter Joe Henry, studio debut I Oughtta Give You a Shot in the Head for Making Me Live in This Dump saw the light in 1999 to great critical acclaim - especially in France and Italy, where it was certified gold and platinum, respectively. One of the album’s singles, “Goodnight Moon,” charted in several European countries and was later used in numerous soundtracks, including 2004’s Kill Bill: Volume 2 and 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook. A second album titled Rougher Dreams dropped in 2002, followed by the EP Breach (2004), featuring covers by Brian Eno and John Cale. In the following years, Shivaree returned with the dark cabaret pop of Who’s Got Trouble? (2005) and performed their swansong with 2007’s Tainted Love: Mating Calls and Fight Songs, an eclectic collection of cover versions of Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, and Mötley Crüe.
