Biography

Alongside the likes of Slipknot, Korn and Machine Head, Lamb Of God were part of the new wave of American heavy metal acts in the late 1990s, turning their noses up at bluesy solos and howling vocals, and embracing the thrashing aggression of death metal. Formed by college friends Mark Morton, Chris Adler and John Campbell while at Virginia Commonwealth University, the band originally called themselves Burn The Priest and released their self-titled debut album through Legion Records in 1999. Becoming Lamb Of God in 2000, they built a steady following with high energy DIY shows and early albums New American Gospel (2000) and As The Palaces Burn (2003). Raging against the Iraq War and sampling an interview with former Marine Jimmy Massey, fourth album Ashes Of The Wake (2004) made a huge commercial breakthrough, reaching the US Top 30 and earning the band a slot on the Ozzfest tour. Follow-up Sacrament (2006) progressed even further, making the US Top 10 and receiving a Grammy nomination, before The Wrath (2009) was seen by many as the band's finest moment, reaching Number 2 and re-positioning their sound within the groove metal sub-genre. Still hugely popular and recognised as a key influence on the metal scene, recent album Resolution (2012) reached Number 3 in the US and has been acclaimed as one of their most inventive records to date, while their eponymous 2020 effort, featuring guest contributions from Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta and Testament’s Chuck Billy, continued to cement their legacy as enduring lynchpins of the scene.
