Biografía

Lupillo Rivera is a multi-award winning Mexican singer-songwriter, known in some circles as El Toro del Corrido. He's the younger brother of the late performer Jenni Rivera and, like her, an artist in the vibrant banda tradition.

Rivera was born Guadalupe Rivera Saavedra in 1972, and in the mid-80s at the age of 15 began composing his own music, dedicating his first song to the memory of his late friend Miguel Carlos Ortega. After graduating Rivera took a job working for his father, the singer Pedro Rivera, working for his record label Cintas Acuario. It was an admin role, but his father encouraged him to continue working on his music and in 1993 he began a solo career under the name Lupillo. He was slow to gain traction, but in 1999 he landed in the Californian Latin Charts with the single 'El Moreño' and scooped up a recording contract with Sony Discos.

From there, Rivera's career began to pick up. In 2002 he won Regional Mexican Male Artist of the Year, Regional Mexican Album of the Year and Banda Artist of the Year at the Lo Nuestro Awards with his album 'Despreciado'. Further nominations followed and Rivera became a regular chart presence through the 2000s.

After his 2012 album 'Mi Manera' Rivera took a five year break from music, appearing as a coach and judge on the TV show 'Latina' before making a recording comeback with 'El Mano' in 2017.
