Drawing comparisons to Portishead, the XX and Florence and the Machine, London Grammar make grand, melancholic, electro-pop soundscapes that elevated them to breakthrough band status in 2013. Hannah Reid (vocals) and Dan Rothman (guitar) met while at Nottingham University and formed the band in 2009, with Dot Major (multi-instrumentalist) joining later. Together they started playing gigs in local bars and crafting sparse, alternative R&B ballads. Signed to the Ministry of Sound label, they became the talk of the blogosphere when a YouTube posting of their track “Hey Now” received over two million hits. The EP Metal and Dust and the singles “Strong” and “Wasting My Young Years” further heightened the buzz. Their 2013 debut album If You Wait reached number 2 in the UK Charts. After four years of touring, writing, and winning awards, they won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for “Strong” as well as two AIM Independent Music Awards for Independent Breakthrough of the Year and Most Played New Independent Act. They released the single “Rooting for You” in 2017 followed by “Big Picture”. Those led to the 2017 LP Truth Is a Beautiful Thing which went to the top of the UK album chart, and reached the top 10 in several countries throughout Europe. Four new singles in 2020 and 2021 were included on the band’s third album, 2021’s Californian Soil. They returned with the follow-up three years later, The Greatest Love, anchored by the lead single "House" and released in September 2024 via Ministry of Sound.
