Biography

Best known as the frontman of The White Stripes, the band he formed with his then-wife and drummer Meg, Jack White – born John Gillis on July 9, 1975, in Detroit Michigan - has worked on a myriad of projects and collaborations during the group’s existence and after their 2011 break up. Throughout his career, Jack White has produced many artists including country music legend Loretta Lynn. Jack White has been honored with many awards over the years including four Grammy Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and a Songwriter/Artist of the Year award from the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International. A fan of classical and blues music as a child, Jack White learned several instruments and eventually wound up as a drummer for Detroit band Goober & The Peas. He formed The White Stripes with Meg White in 1997 and together they recorded seven albums. Setting up his own label, Third Man Records, in 2001, Jack White also worked on numerous other musical projects including forming The Raconteurs in 2005 with Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keeler. He formed The Dead Weather in 2009, a group that also included Alison Mosshart of The Kills, The Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence, and Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age. Jack White also branched out as a solo artist, composing the soundtrack to the 2003 movie Cold Mountain, and collaborating with Alicia Keys on the James Bond theme “Another Way to Die” (as featured in 2008’s Quantum of Solace). In 2009, filmmaker Emmett Malloy released Under Great White Northern Lights, a documentary about The White Stripes' 2007 tour across Canada. The group went on hiatus for several years but officially announced their split in 2011. In 2012, Jack White released his debut solo album Blunderbuss, which received Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. His second solo album, Lazaretto (2014) reached Number 1 on the Billboard 200 and received three Grammy nominations winning one for Best Rock Performance. In 2018, he released his third solo album, Boarding House Reach, which debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard 200. After a four-year wait, he released his fourth solo album, Fear of the Dawn, in April 2022. The album reached the Top 20 in Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Poland, Scotland, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. Preceded by the singles "Taking Me Back (Gently)" and "Love Is Selfish," the folk-tinged Entering Heaven Alive hit retail a few months later, reaching Number 9 on the Billboard 200 and Number 4 on the UK Albums Chart.
