John Fogerty was at school with Stu Alden and Doug Clifford in El Cerrito, California and formed covers band the Blue Velvets with them to back Fogerty's elder brother Tom. However, when the younger Fogerty started writing his own material, he also took over as lead singer to perform it. Signed to Fantasy Records, they became The Golliwogs but changed their name to Creedence Clearwater Revival in time for their 1969 debut album, which produced one hit single - a cover of an old rockabilly hit Suzie Q. Second album Bayou Country confirmed their growing identity as compelling roots rockers, producing their first major hit Proud Mary, followed by the iconic rocker Bad Moon Rising. Energetic shows made them fixtures and a favourite live act but as the hits dried up the band split in 1972 and John Fogerty launched his solo career. However, their profile has remained high, particularly after Bad Moon Rising was featured in the movie An American Werewolf in London.
