Baroness are an American heavy metal band formed in Georgia in 2003 by singer-songwriter and guitarist John Baizley, guitarist Tim Loose, bassist Summer Welch and drummer Allen Blickle. Baizley is the sole remaining original member, with the current lineup featuring singer Gina Gleason, bassist Nick Jost and drummer Sebastian Thomson.
The founding members grew up in Lexington, Virginia and played in the band Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. Relocating to Georgia they released three EPs and in 2007 came their debut full-length recording 'Red Album'. Their second album 'Blue Record' (2009) went to number 15 on Billboard's Hard Rock Albums Chart and they toured internationally with 2010 appearances at the Coachella and Bonnaroo music festivals. Their third album 'Yellow and Green' reached number six on the Hard Rock Chart and number eight on the Top Rock Albums Chart in 2012, and later that year they survived a serious bus crash while on tour in England. Several players had broken bones that required a lengthy period of recovery.
Blickle and bassist Matt Maggioni had stints with the band as did guitarist and backing vocalist Peter Adams, who joined in 2008 and left in 2017 to be succeeded by Gleason. Jost and Thomson joined in 2013. Their 2016 album 'Purple', which features songs that reflect on their experience in the crash, went to number two on the Hard Rock Chart and number five on the Rock Chart. Their 2016 single 'Shock Me' from the 'Purple' album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
In 2019, Baroness announced their sixth studio album 'Gold & Grey' due for release in June of the same year and will be the band's final colour-themed title. It includes the single 'Borderlines' which was played for the first time at their tour with Deafheaven in March 2019.
