With a career spanning almost four decades and more than 50 singles and 18 albums to her credit, the German singer Kristina Bach is something of an institution in German popular music. She was born Kerstin Bräuer in Mettmann, North Rhine-Westphalia in 1962 and began singing professionally in the early 1980s releasing her debut single 'Donna Maria' in 1983. In 1984 she enjoyed her first big hit with her second single 'Heißer Sand', a track which had previously been a hit in the 1960s for the Italian singer Mina. In 1990 Bach released the single 'Erst ein Cappucino' and this song, perhaps more than any other, has defined her career. In 1993 she enjoyed international recognition when her dance version of 'Phantom of the Opera' spent several weeks in the top 20 of the US Billboard charts.
Bach sings in the classic 'Schlager' genre, the easy-going, happy-go-lucky pop music loved by German mainstream audiences. It's a style which has paid off handsomely for Bach and she has now won the prestigious Deutsche Schlagerparade no less than six times, an unprecedented achievement which has cemented Bach's position as one of Germany's most successful pop singers.
