Bilderbuch are a four-piece from Kremsmünster, Austria. Formed in 2005 by high school mates Maurice Ernst, Peter Horazdovsky, Andreas Födinger, and Klemens Kranewetter, they relocated to Vienna in 2008 to start working on their first album with Zebo Adam and Manfred Franzmeier (of Russkaja fame). That same year, Kranewetter left the band and was replaced by Michael Krammer. Their studio debut Nelken & Schillinge arrived in 2009 and established Bilderbuch as one of the most exciting indie rock acts in their native Austria. Drummer Andreas Födinger left the group after the release of the concept album Die Pest im Piemont (2011) and drummer Philipp Scheibl was brought into the fold. The band completely revamped their sound for 2015’s Schick Shock, incorporating elements from R&B, hip-hop, and dance pop into their unique amalgamation of styles. The move ultimately paid off and Shick Shock reached the top of the charts in Austria, propelled by the singles “Maschin,” “Spliff,” and “OM.” It also won Album of the Year at the Amadeus Austrian Music Awards 2016. In the following years, Bilderbuch went on to release a string of highly successful commercial albums such as Magic Life (2017), Mea Culpa (2018), and Vernissage My Heart (2019), which topped the Austrian charts. After issuing 2019’s standalone single “Mr. Refrigerator,” they returned in 2021 with the Top 40 single “Nahuel Huapi.”
