A member of the alternative band Sonic Youth from 1981 to 2011, singer, bassist and guitarist Kim Gordon, born in Rochester, New York on April 28, 1953, has also been involved in other experimental projects. She grew up in California and moved to New York in 1980, where she frequented the punk/no wave scene and met her future husband Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, with whom she founded Sonic Youth. Over the next thirty years, the band would profoundly revolutionize rock with its noisy bias and quest for experimentation, leaving behind such essential albums as Bad Moon Rising (1985), Sister (1987), Daydream Nation (1989) and Goo (1990). Also associated with projects such as Harry Crews, Ciccone Youth, Lucky Sperms, Free Kitten, Mirror/Dash, Body/Head and Glitterbust, Kim Gordon collaborated with DJ Olive and Japanese composer Ikue Mori on the improvised electro-acoustic album SYR 5, released in 2000 on Sonic Youth's label, before recording YokoKimThurston (2012), with Yoko Ono and Thurston Moore, from which she parted company in 2013. She then went solo with the albums No Home Record (2019), an exercise in electro-industrial noise rock. In 2024, her third album The Collective, ventured into experimental hip-hop with the help of producers Justin Raisen and Anthony Paul Lopez, again at work on Play Me (2026).
