Biography

Becoming a giant in Latin music thanks to his mix of big pop hooks, trap beats, and sun-kissed reggaeton swank, Bad Bunny crossed over and scored his first US Number 1 when he collaborated with Cardi B and J Balvin on the single "I Like It" in 2018.

Born on March 10, 1994, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Benito Ocasio started out singing in the local Catholic church choir and writing songs in his bedroom before discovering pop favorites such as Daddy Yankee, Hector Lavoe, and Vico C. A photograph of him dressed up as the Easter Bunny with a grumpy, sulky look on his face earned him the nickname Bad Bunny as a teenager and he started independently recording and releasing under that name while studying communications at the University of Puerto Rico.

His track "Diles" quickly became popular on social media and built up a following; he was still working in a supermarket and performing in local clubs when reggaeton stars DJ Luian and Mambo Kingz signed him to their Hear the Music label in 2016. A remix of "Diles" also featured Farruko and Ozuna and went on to receive more than 400 million views on YouTube, while follow-up singles "Tu No Vive Asi" and "Soy Peor" made him one of the hottest young Latin pop stars in the world.

His collaboration with J Balvin, "Si Tu Novio Te Deja Sola," became the first trap song ever nominated for a Latin Grammy Award and he went on to work with Becky G on the hit "Mayores," with Enrique Iglesias on "El Baño," Daddy Yankee on "Vuelve," Nicki Minaj on "Krippy Kush," and with Prince Royce on the Spanish Number 1 "Sensualidad." Known for his flamboyant dress sense, creative haircuts, and sensitive, soulful lyrics, Bad Bunny hit new heights when he, Cardi B, and J Balvin created the tropical, Latin-trap hit "I Like It," which topped the US charts and was named Song of the Summer at the MTV Video Music Awards. Following the song's international success, Bad Bunny collaborated with Drake on the track "Mia" before releasing his debut album X 100pre (2018). In 2019, he again collaborated with J Balvin on the album Oasis before both performers featured on the Super Bowl halftime show alongside Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. Bad Bunny then released his second solo album YHLQMDLG (2020) which peaked at Number 2 on the US Billboard 200 and reached the top spot of the US Top Latin Albums Chart. More success followed with 2020's El Último Tour del Mundo, another chart-topping album that featured Spanish singer Rosalía on the hit single "La Noche de Anoche." Un Verano Sin Ti, his fourth consecutive Number 1 album on the US Top Latin chart, appeared in 2022 and included guest spots by Chencho Corleone, Jhay Cortez, Rauw Alejandro, Bomba Estéreo, The Marías, and Buscabulla.
