Raymond Terry Usher IV pousse ses premiers cris à Dallas, au Texas, le 14 octobre 1978 et grandit à Chattanooga, dans le Tennessee, au sein d'une famille de la classe moyenne. Passionné de chant, de hip-hop et de breakdance, le futur Usher, qui se fait alors appeler Asher, fait ses premières armes dans la chorale de l'église et met sa voix au service des choeurs que dirige sa mère.

Quelques années plus tard, les contingences salariales obligent la famille à déménager à Atlanta (Géorgie) où le jeune homme découvre une « urban culture » qu'il ne connaissait alors depuis son Tennessee natal que par la prisme de la télévision. Pratiquant le breakdance, il profite des trous dans son emploi du temps scolaire pour courir les castings et les concours de chant. Une politique qui lui réussit puisqu'en 1992, alors qu'il n'est âgé que de 14 ans, il se fait repérer lors d'un de ces radio-crochets par Antonio Reid, fondateur du label LaFace Records. Croyant dans le potentiel du jeune homme, L .A. Reid (de son surnom officiel) lui propose de signer un premier disque, « Think of You ».

Répétitions intensives, cours de chants, de danse... en 1994, Usher, coaché par Sean J. Combs (plus connu en tant que Puff Daddy, futur P. Diddy) est fin prêt à sortir son premier album, tout bonnement baptisé Usher. Premier disque d'or pour le kid d'Atlanta, qui s'impose comme l'une des révélations de la scène hip-hop/R&B de l'année. Bien décidé à ne pas stopper un tel poulain en pleine course, Puff Daddy et L.A. Reid font de leur protégé une figure médiatique de premier plan : composition d'un jingle pour Coca Cola, participation à une bande originale de film (Jason's Lyrics), animation de l'ouverture des Jeux olympiques d'Atlanta, Usher acquiert une visibilité médiatique de premier plan.

My Way, deuxième album d'Usher, sort en 1997, alors que ce dernier vient de terminer ses études au lycée. Derrière le chanteur-séducteur, se profile déjà le futur producteur avisé et homme d'affaires coriace, car le jeune homme, à peine entré dans l'âge adulte a bien compris le concept des droits d'auteur. Co-signant la majeure partie des titres de l'album et s'offrant pour l'occasion la participation de quelques invités, il s'assure une part de profit non négligeable en cas de succès de l'album.

Pari réussi puisque ce dernier devient très vite Disque d'or partout dans le monde anglo-saxon. « You Make Me Wanna... », « Nice & Slow » et « My Way » deviennent les nouveaux tubes sur lesquels la jeunesse fan de R &B (genre alors naissant) se trémousse en rêvant de ce beau jeune homme à la plastique impeccable et soigneusement étudiée. Fort du succès de ce deuxième album, Usher souhaite jouer à l'artiste pluridisciplinaire et tente sa chance comme acteur dans quelques teen-movies faciles... par respect pour la dignité de l'artiste, ses prestations dans The Faculty de Robert Rodriguez ou She's All That, de Robert Iscove (sorti en France sous le titre Elle est trop bien, à se procurer d'urgence...) ne seront pas détaillées plus en avant.

Peu convaincu par son expérience devant les caméras, Usher décide de plaquer une hypothétique carrière hollywoodienne, et sans que cela puisse être qualifié de traversée du désert, disparaît cependant des studios d'enregistrement pendant quelques années, le temps de se recomposer quelques futurs hits. En 2001, il fait son grand retour dans les bacs avec 8701, album de la maturité, selon la formule consacrée. « U Remind Me », « Pop Ya Collar » ou encore « U Got It Bad » sont autant de cartons qui consacrent Usher, jusqu'alors simple vedette, comme une star internationale.

Car l'album, contrairement à ses prédécesseurs, casse la baraque non seulement dans le monde anglo-saxon, mais aussi au Japon, en Europe et en Russie. DVD promotionnels et albums live se succèdent pour le petit prince du R&B, jusqu'en 2004, où son nouvel album Confessions sort dans les bacs et rencontre un succès prévisible (16 millions d'albums vendus). Fort de ce succès, Usher renoue avec le cinéma en 2006 dans In the Mix, où il interprète le rôle d'un DJ. En mai 2008, paraît Here I Stand, cinquième album studio du chanteur.

Le succès planétaire de Here I Stand, conforte Usher dans la recherche d'un style plus adulte que ses premières productions. Raymond V. Raymond en 2010 est censé en être le reflet, malgré des critiques généralement négatives lors de sa sortie. Critiques qui n'entravent en rien le succès de l'album, en particulier dans les pays anglo-saxons. Usher ne se contente pas de maintenir ce confortable niveau de ventes, il entend évoluer.

Sans rien remettre en question, Looking 4 Myself en 2012 cède aux accents de la dance R&B. Rebaptisée « revolutionary pop » par son auteur, la tendance donne naissance à deux nouveaux tubes (« Climax » et « Scream ») lors de sla sortie de l'album en juin 2012. Dans les années qui précèdent la sortie de l'album Hard II Love (2016), qui inclut le duo « Champions » avec Ruben Blades (extrait de la B.O. Hands in Stone), Usher ne baisse pas la cadence avec une multitude de singles comprenant « She Came to Give It to You » avec Nicki Minaj, « I Don't Mind » avec Juicy J (2014), « Chains » avec Nas et Bibi Bourrelly (2015), ainsi que « No Limit » avec Young Thug et « Rivals » avec Future.
