Initially celebrated as a child star in her native Denmark, Gitte Hænning moved to Germany in the 1960s, scoring Number 1 hits like "Ich will 'nen Cowboy als Mann" and "Vom Stadtpark die Laternen" before she turned 20 years old. She was born in Aarhus, Denmark, on June 29, 1946, and made her musical debut as her father's duet partner on the hit single "Giftes med farmand" at eight years old. Still a child, she moved to Sweden in 1958 and landed another hit with "Tror du jag ljuge," then relocated to Germany in 1959. Released in 1963, "Ich will ’nen Cowboy als Mann" became a countrywide phenomenon in Germany, winning the German Schlager Festival, peaking at Number 1 on the pop charts, and selling more than one million copies. Another song, "Ta' med ud a fisk," became a Number 1 hit in Denmark that same year, while "Kom ned på jorden igen" topped the charts in Sweden. The songs' success was matched by Gitte Hænning's popular duets with Rex Gildo, which the two singers released under the name "Gitte & Rex." The duo's first single, "Vom Stadtpark die Laternen," topped the charts in Germany, marking Gittie Hænning's fourth song to hit Number 1 hit in 1963. "Jetzt dreht die Welt sich nur um dich" became a Top 10 hit one year later, but Gitte & Rex proved to be a short-lived project, and Gitte Hænning resumed her solo career in 1965. That year, she topped the Swedish charts again with "Det kan väl inte jag rå för," her cover of France Gall's "Poupée de cire, poupée de son," then returned to Number 1 in 1966 with "Det är så lätt att leva livet." Back in Germany, she remained one of the country's best-known Schlager singers for decades. She represented the country in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest with "Junger Tag" and charted at Number 9 with her gold-certified 1983 album Berührungen. Active well into her 60s, she released the albums Mit jedem Abschied fängt was an and Salz in der Luft in 2011.
