Built around sludgy blues
riffs, wailing vocal highs, and classic rock cacophony, Michigan four-piece
Greta Van Fleet may have been founded by a trio of small-town, teenage siblings,
but they summon the spirit of sweaty, long-haired blues-rock gods from the
1970s. Led by twins Jake and Josh Kiszka and younger brother Sam, they took
inspiration from their father's collection of Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Muddy
Waters records and started crashing around together in 2012 with original
drummer Kyle Hauck. They replaced Hauck with Danny Wagner and self-released a
live album in 2014, before really starting to build a fan base when their songs
were used in local commercials. Their stomping, howling single “Highway Tune”
- which the twins wrote when they were 16 - brought them further attention when
it featured in the Showtime television series Shameless and notched up
millions of plays on Spotify and YouTube, while they cut their teeth supporting
English glam rockers The Struts on tour. The band cemented their reputation as
prodigious, hard rock heroes in the making with EPs Black Smoke Rising
and From the Fires in 2017 with their first full-length album released
in 2018 as Anthem of the Peaceful Army.
From the Fires
took home a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2019, though the group lost Best New
Artist to Duo Lipa. The 2020 single “My Way, Soon” became their 5th
song to top the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and it appeared on their 2021
LP The Battle At Garden’s Gate.
